Let’s Talk About It: Table Talk Tuesday!
Sweet almond oil is a lightweight, nutrient-rich oil that’s widely loved in both skincare and soap making for its gentle yet effective properties. It’s packed with vitamin E, fatty acids, and antioxidants that support overall skin health.
Hydrates:
Sweet almond oil helps draw moisture into the skin thanks to its emollient properties. Its high content of oleic and linoleic acids allows it to pe*****te the skin easily, delivering hydration without leaving a heavy or greasy feel.
Moisturizes:
It forms a protective barrier on the skin that locks in moisture, making it especially helpful for dry or sensitive skin. Regular use leaves the skin feeling soft, smooth, and nourished while improving overall texture and elasticity.
Heals:
With natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, sweet almond oil helps calm irritation, reduce redness, and support the healing of minor skin issues like dryness, itching, and mild inflammation. It can also aid in repairing the skin barrier over time.
Benefits in Soap & Body Products:
In soap making, sweet almond oil contributes to a gentle, conditioning bar that’s suitable for most skin types. It enhances the moisturizing quality of soaps, adds a silky feel to the lather, and helps prevent the skin from feeling stripped after cleansing. In lotions, scrubs, and body oils, it acts as a nourishing base that improves spreadability, boosts hydration, and leaves a soft, radiant finish on the skin.

Question of the Hour: What is Soda Ash?
Soda Ash in Soap Making
✔️Pros
• Purely cosmetic – does not make the soap unsafe to use
• Indicates active saponification – often forms when soap is still reacting properly
• Can create a rustic look – some makers like the natural, matte finish
• Easily removable – can be fixed without damaging the soap
⸻
❌Cons
• Unattractive appearance – leaves a white, powdery film on the surface
• Can dull colors/designs – especially noticeable on darker or vibrant soaps
• Customer perception – may look like mold or poor quality to buyers
• Slight texture change – can feel chalky on the outer layer
⸻
🧪How & When It Forms
• Forms during the first 24–72 hours of curing (sometimes longer)
• Caused by a reaction between unsaponified lye (sodium hydroxide) and carbon dioxide in the air
• Most common in cold process soap
• More likely when:
• Soap is exposed to open air too soon
• Lower temperatures are used during soaping
• High water content in the recipe
• Appears as a white, dusty or chalky layer on the surface
⸻
🛑How to Prevent It
• Spray the top with 91–99% isopropyl alcohol immediately after pouring
• Cover the mold (lid, cardboard, or plastic wrap)
• Soap at slightly higher temperatures
• Use a water discount (less water in recipe)
• Encourage gel phase (insulate the soap)
⸻
♨️How to Get Rid of It
• Steam the surface (quick and most effective)
• Rinse briefly with water and let dry
• Wipe with a damp cloth
• Plane or shave off the top layer for a clean finish.
