The “Vissie” series started with a simple Mother’s Day gift from my 8-year-old son.
He gave me R25. I didn’t really want to take his money, but I also didn’t want to give it back because I knew how much it meant to him.
So I decided to do something meaningful with it.
At first I had no idea what. I mean, what can you really buy for R25?
Eventually I bought a small wooden canvas and felt in my heart to paint a fish on it.
When I started thinking about it, I realised how often fish appear in the Bible. Some of my favourite stories are the ones where Jesus uses fish to show His goodness and His provision. That’s what these little paintings have become for me. A reminder that He always provides, often in ways we don’t expect.
I shared the story on social media, and within a few hours the painting was sold to a lovely lady in Cape Town.
She actually paid more than I asked. From that money I was able to give my son R200.
It felt like God was (once again) reminding me of His goodness and provision. And believe me, I need daily reminders. At the same time, I could show my son how one small act of generosity can create a ripple effect far bigger than we ever imagined.
Today that little fish painting hangs among other artworks on her dining room wall, quietly reminding her of that same truth.
After sharing the story, more people asked if I would paint one for them. And so I sold a second one...
That’s how the Vissie series was born.
Each little fish carries the same reminder: Jesus’ goodness, His provision, and the unexpected ways He works through even the smallest acts of kindness
