Millions of men walk away every year, leaving millions of mothers to raise children on their own. These men often convince themselves that everything is fine because they send a child support check and show up for a "visit" once a week, maybe twice, or sometimes just once a month.

When you try to tell them that this isn't normal—that it’s deeply damaging, especially to the child—they dismiss it calmly:

“No, no, it’s all good. The split was amicable, she’s doing fine, and the kid is happy.”

But the child... the child has no frame of reference. They don’t know how good life could be if Dad were there every single day. So, they settle for a few hours of attention and a Happy Meal at McDonald's, thinking that’s what love looks like.

What hurts the most is the quiet truth beneath the surface: in a way, that father has sacrificed his child at the altar of his own pleasure, his own comfort, and his own ego.

I’m reminded of a story from a woman in my parish. Her daughter’s husband walked out the moment their baby was born. He just vanished, a story we hear all too often these days. The daughter was in such a dark place mentally that she didn't even have the strength to go to court and fight for child support. He knew this—and he was glad he didn't have to pay.

He knew he had a son somewhere out in the world, but he chose not to care. The grandmother told me that years later, when her grandson was a teenager staying at her place in the country, he would disappear for two or three hours every morning after breakfast.

Finally, she decided to follow him. She watched as the boy walked out into a wide, open field, stood among the tall grass, and began to scream:

“Dad! Dad!” He screamed until his voice cracked, then he’d wipe his tears and walk back home.
