Many women are familiar with mammograms as part of routine breast screening, but fewer women realise there are several different imaging tools available β each looking at the breast in a completely different way.
Understanding the differences matters because no single test gives the full picture.
πππππππππ
Mammograms use low-dose X-ray imaging to look for structural changes within the breast, such as masses or calcifications.
They can be an important screening tool after diagnosis, but they have limitations:
β’ Reduced sensitivity in dense breast tissue
β’ False positives that may lead to additional testing
β’ Exposure to low-dose ionising radiation
β’ They assess structure only β not function or physiology
A mammogram may identify that βsomethingβ is present, but further imaging is needed to better understand what that finding means.
ππππππππππ
Ultrasound uses soundwave technology to create images of breast tissue.
It is commonly used:
β’ To assess lumps or areas of concern
β’ To distinguish between fluid-filled cysts and solid masses
β’ Alongside mammograms in women with dense breast tissue
Ultrasound involves:
β No radiation
β No compression
β Real-time imaging
However, ultrasound is generally targeted imaging rather than a full physiological overview of breast health.
ππππππππππππ
Thermography is different because it looks at physiology and vascular patterns rather than structure alone.
Using infrared thermal imaging technology, thermography measures heat and blood flow patterns on the surface of the body. These patterns may reflect:
β’ Inflammation
β’ Vascular activity
β’ Hormonal influence
β’ Lymphatic congestion
β’ Areas requiring monitoring over time
Thermography:
β Is non-invasive
β Uses no radiation
β Has no compression
β Is contact-free
β Can be suitable for women with dense breasts, implants, tenderness, or younger breast tissue
One of the greatest strengths of thermography is that it allows for comparison over time. Rather than focusing only on whether a lump is present, it looks for changes in thermal and vascular patterns that may indicate tissue stress or altered physiology.
At our studio, thermography is used as part of a broader breast wellness approach β encouraging women to become proactive, body-aware, and engaged in their long-term breast health journey.
Importantly:
Thermography does not diagnose cancer and is not a replacement for recommended imaging.
It is a screening tool designed to provide additional information and consistent and safe monitoring, while giving women the best opportunity for monitoring their health.
ππππππ πππ
MRI provides highly detailed imaging and is often used for:
β’ Higher-risk women
β’ BRCA mutation carriers
β’ Complex or unclear findings
β’ Further investigation after other imaging
MRI is very sensitive, but it can also produce false positives and often requires contrast dye.

Breast health conversations deserve nuance, education, and informed choice. πΈ
For many women, mammograms are part of their routine screening journey β and they can play an important role in detecting structural changes within breast tissue. But itβs also important to understand that no single screening tool is perfect, and every modality has strengths and limitations.
A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that looks for structural abnormalities such as masses or calcifications. While it can help detect some cancers early, it may also lead to:
β’ False positives that create stress and further testing
β’ Missed findings in women with dense breast tissue
β’ Additional imaging or biopsies
β’ Questions around cumulative radiation exposure over time
Dense breast tissue in particular can make mammogram interpretation more challenging, which is why many women benefit from discussing supplemental imaging options with their healthcare team.
Breast health is bigger than a yearly scan alone. π
There are also other imaging tools that may be used depending on individual needs, including:
Thermography β monitors heat, vascular, and inflammatory patterns over time
Ultrasound β especially useful for distinguishing cystic vs solid tissue and assessing dense breasts
MRI β highly sensitive imaging often reserved for higher-risk situations
Each tool offers different information.
None should replace clinical assessment, self-awareness, or personalised medical advice.
At The Breast Wellness Studio, we believe women deserve:
β¨ Education without fear
β¨ Transparency about screening options
β¨ Supportive conversations around breast density and risk factors
β¨ A proactive approach to breast wellness and whole-body health
Knowing your body matters.
Understanding your options matters.
Feeling empowered in your healthcare decisions matters.
Always speak with your medical advisor about the screening approach most appropriate for you.

Breast health is more than just a check β itβs about flow, function, and whole-body wellness.
Many women experience breast heaviness, tenderness, swelling, or underarm discomfort and donβt realise this can be linked to the lymphatic system.
Your lymphatic system is your bodyβs natural drainage pathway β helping to clear fluid, inflammation, and waste from the breast and chest area. When this flow slows, the body feels it.
At The Breast Wellness Studio & The Healthy Living Naturopath, we support this gently and naturally through:
β¨ Lymphatic breast & chest drainage
β¨ Thermal breast imaging
β¨ Scar tissue & post-surgical support
β¨ Naturopathic care for inflammation, hormones & overall wellbeing
This is not just about treatment β itβs about understanding your body and supporting it the way it was designed.
π Your breast wellness matters.
