Gel phase! Ever wondered why some handmade soaps have a darker circle through the middle like this one?
This is called gel phase.
During the soap-making process, the natural heat from the saponification reaction can cause the centre of the soap to warm up and enter what's known as gel phase. If only part of the loaf reaches this temperature, you get partial gel, which creates a visible ring or darker centre.
It's completely normal and doesn't affect the quality, safety, or performance of the soap—it can actually improve the longevity of the bar!
