When Aela first walked into my salon, her biggest goal wasn't nail art. It was finally having natural nails she didn't have to hide.

Her nails weren't strong enough to grow on their own, so we started with Gel-X to protect them while they grew. A few appointments later, we transitioned to hard gel. Now? They're long, healthy, and entirely her own.

Some clients become part of your story without either of you really noticing.

She came to me before a holiday to Japan. Somewhere That holiday turned into an engagement. 💍

Then came her hens.

Next up? Her wedding.

I've had the privilege of creating nails she'll look at during some of the biggest moments of her life, and I don't take that lightly.

I'm so incredibly honoured (and still a little in shock!) to share that Nails by Shelly R. has been named a finalist for the Australian Beauty Industry Awards 2026 – Sole Operator of the Year. 🏆

When I started this business in 2021, I simply wanted to create the kind of nail appointment I wished existed—a calm, one-on-one space where people felt comfortable, creativity could flourish, hygiene was never compromised, and every client felt seen.

Being a sole operator is one of the most rewarding things I've ever done, but it's also one of the hardest. Behind every appointment are the unseen hours of admin, cleaning, sterilising, education, problem-solving and wearing every hat imaginable. Some days, it genuinely takes a healthy dose of optimism (and maybe just a little delusion 😅) to keep believing in your vision and pushing forward.
