Understanding your Products
A moisturiser has a different feel and function to a body butter because of the water content ie. adds water ... rather than acting as barrier, which is what you get when you put oils and body butters on your skin. Both body butters and moisturisers have their place (and a body butter doesn't need the same degree of preservative system because it doesn't contain water) but it's important to understand the differences and how they can support your skin.
How they work
A moisturiser typically contains:
Water – hydrates the outer skin layers.
Humectants (e.g. hyaluronic acid) – attract water into the skin.
Emollients/Occlusives – these are the fats and waxes, like bee's wax, that smooth the skin and reduce water loss.
A body butter is mostly an occlusive/emollient product. It forms a barrier that slows evaporation of water already in your skin.
Which is better?
It depends on your skin:
Dehydrated skin (lacking water): a moisturiser is usually more effective.
Dry skin (lacking oils/barrier function): a body butter can be excellent.
Very dry or cracked skin: moisturiser first, then body butter on top often works best.
A simple analogy
Think of skin like a sponge:
A moisturiser adds water to the sponge and helps it hold onto it.
A body butter wraps the sponge in a thin layer that stops the water evaporating.
