YOUR FROWN HAS ITS OWN PATTERN
Understanding the anatomy behind expression.

The area between your eyebrows is called the glabella. Several muscles work together here, and differences in how they move help explain why no two frowns look exactly alike.

Five commonly described movement patterns include:

〰 V pattern
The inner eyebrows draw together and downwards, creating a V-like movement.

〰 U pattern
The inner eyebrows move slightly towards each other, while the outer brows lift.

〰 Converging arrows
The eyebrows draw towards the centre, with relatively little upward or downward movement.

〰 Omega pattern
The inner eyebrows draw together and lift, while the outer brows lower.

〰 Inverted omega pattern
The central brow region moves downwards, sometimes with movement around the top of the nose.

These names describe movement patterns, rather than five fixed categories. Some people have a combination, or different movement on each side.

Frown lines are a normal feature of facial expression. Their presence does not necessarily reflect how you feel, and having them does not mean you need treatment.

Earlier this week, I travelled to Melbourne on my own initiative for what became one of the most influential days of my entire nursing career.

I spent the day learning with Mike Clague at Facelove. Mike was an adjunct lecturer when I completed Monash University’s Patient Suitability, Governance, Compliance and Ethics of Non-Surgical Cosmetic Medicine short course, so the opportunity to learn from him in person meant a great deal to me.

The day was unlike any education I’ve experienced before. It was tailored to my level of skill, challenged the way I think and gave me so much to take back into my practice.

Finding someone whose work you admire and whose judgment you respect can make a world of difference to your own. Sometimes, one day of learning changes how you see the work you’ve been doing for years.

Thank you, Mike, for sharing your knowledge so generously. I couldn’t have asked for a more valuable day. Fifteen years into my career, I feel more inspired than ever to keep learning.
