Revealed: Southwest Sydney’s favourite hairdresser for 2021
She’s a dedicated Casula hairdresser who is part of the fabric of her community, describing her customers as friends. Now she’s been voted by you as the top hairdresser in southwest Sydney.

At no time was the importance of hairdressers more pronounced than during the Covid lockdown.
When hairdressers opened their doors on October 11 after four long months of shaggy mullets and grey regrowth, lines of customers stretched around the block and books filled up months in advance.

We asked readers who the best hairdresser in their area is.
Across the southwest of Sydney, Mary Broadley of Hair Creations by Mary in Casula was a clear favourite.

She has been a hairdresser in the region for 36 years, opening a shop in Casula Mall before moving to Fitzpatrick Cres about four years ago.

Mary has a loyal customer base who she considers more like friends than clients.
“I call them more friends. I cut the hair of their kids, their grandkids. They bring young children who won’t go to the barbers and won’t get their hair cut anywhere else,” she said.
“Customers feel really comfortable when they come (to the salon). They like to chat to one another, they know each other … They like what I do and they keep coming back. A lot of them come every week”.

Mary said she was so grateful to her clients, who showered her with gifts after the long Covid hiatus.
“The last five months not being open, for everyone to come back and say ‘I miss you’. They were so kind, so gracious. Nearly everyone brought me presents.
“Even when lockdown was on, they were following up and asking how I was. I missed them so much. They are the reason I don’t want to retire,” she said.

Although she concedes she probably should retire, Mary said she will continue to run her business until she can’t physically do the job any longer.
“Hair is the reason why I’m still working. I love it that much. I can’t give it up.”
“I’ll be here until my legs break or my fingers break,” she said.
