A question I get asked all the time. What actually counts as a medium tattoo for removal?

A medium tattoo is generally anything up to 8cm x 8cm. To make that easier to picture, it is roughly the size of one of these everyday objects:

A deck of cards. A bar of soap. A Post-it note. A napkin. A coaster.

These are just a guide, but they give you a much more practical way to visualise it than trying to measure yourself.

From there, size is only one part of the picture. Placement, pigment, how saturated the ink is and how your skin responds will all influence how the removal process looks for you specifically.

Every tattoo is different, which is why I always prefer a conversation over a generic answer.

My client came to me feeling like her lips were too small, lacked colour and were not a shape she felt confident in. She had been seriously considering injectables to address this.

After sitting down and talking it through together, we decided to try tattooing first to see how much we could enhance what was already there.

And honestly, the result surprised even her.

What a lot of people do not realise is that tattooing and injectables do very different things. Injectables work with volume. Tattooing works with definition, colour and can also help with symmetry. They can complement each other beautifully, but sometimes tattooing alone is enough to give you exactly what you were looking for.

By adding soft definition, shape and a flush of colour, we were able to bring out the full natural shape of her lips. Lips that were always there, just waiting to be seen.

One of the most common questions I get asked about tattoo removal is whether it will completely remove the tattoo or just fade it.

The honest answer is that it depends, and I would rather give you a real answer than an easy one.

For many of my clients, full removal is absolutely achievable. For others, significant fading is the more realistic outcome, and that is still a life-changing result, particularly for those wanting to lighten a tattoo enough to cover it with something new.

What affects the result comes down to a few things. The age of the tattoo, the type and colour of ink used, how deeply it was applied, and how your skin responds to treatment over time.
