There are plenty of people offering massage and other therapies, but when it comes to your horse, who you choose matters.

Look for someone who is qualified, understands equine anatomy and movement, works within their scope of practice and knows when something needs to be referred on to another professional.

Your horse deserves more than someone who simply knows how to rub muscles. They deserve someone who understands WHY they’re doing it🤍.

Did you know that after an equine massage session, your horse may receive homework? 👀

The exercises I recommend are chosen based on what I’ve observed during your horse’s session: their movement, areas of tension, coordination and overall presentation.

One exercise you may receive is this pole zig-zag.

Set up 3 poles in a straight line, end-to-end then guide your horse left and right across the poles in a gentle zig-zag, working your way down the line.

It looks simple… but there’s actually a lot happening!

This exercise can help encourage:
• Hoof–brain coordination & symmetry.
• Thoracic sling muscle engagement.
• Core engagement and postural control.
• Better horse–rider communication and understanding when performed ridden.

The goal isn’t to rush through the poles. Slow, controlled movement is the focus, allowing your horse time to think about their foot placement and maintain balance through each change of direction.

And this is exactly why I love giving clients exercises to continue at home.. the session doesn’t have to stop once the massage is finished🤍.

Your horse’s homework is always individualised to them and what they need, rather than a one-size-fits-all exercise.

Massage + appropriate movement = supporting your horse between sessions!

It might seem like a small thing, but those extra few minutes can make a big difference.

Arriving early gives me time to:
🤍 Meet you and have a quick chat before we begin.
🤍 Meet your horse and allow them to get comfortable with me.
🤍 Take in how your horse is presenting on the day.
🤍 Give your horse time to settle into their environment.
🤍 Ask about any changes since their last session.
🤍 Get everything ready so we can start your appointment smoothly.

I don’t want to rush straight into treatment the moment I arrive.

That little bit of time to observe, connect and settle in is part of the session too.

Every horse is different and sometimes those first few minutes can tell me a lot before I’ve even placed my hands on them.

I know I am not the only one who is really aggravated by these questions... but when someone asks for recommendations for a chiropractor/vet/professional who "doesn't costs an arm or a leg" it honestly makes my skin crawl.

I get it, horses are expensive.

Cost of living is high.

Most of us are not the beneficiaries of a billionnaire's estate.

I get it, I'm with you.

AND.

You. Get. What. You. Pay. For.

I responded recently to a post asking just this for an equine chiropractor (and see so many daily for vets, trainers, dentists, whatever)... so let's spell out why this is a crappy question to ask - sticking specifically to chiropractic but remembering this transfers across titles and professions:

Chiropractor is not a protected term when it comes to animal treatments. This means that any person with any background can create a nice little canva image, post on facebook and call themselves a chiropractor and right away start charging money to unsuspecting horse owners.

In human practice, "chiropractor" is actually a protected term. Meaning it is illegal to call yourself a chiropractor without the appropriate qualifications and registrations.

What this mean is that if you go to a chiropractor yourself, you are going to someone who has completed at least one university degree. For me, it was actually two, a bachelors and masters degree adding up to 5 years of study and at a price of just shy of $100,000. Does that mean any chiropractor will necessarily be the ideal practitioner for you? No. Does it mean that nobody ever gets weird ideas and goes off track from their training? No. But it does at least mean that they have had extensive training and continue to attend significant continuing professional development.

In order to qualify to work on horses you must be qualified as a human chiropractor or vet (again, both 5 year qualifications), work in that position and then complete further study for another roughly year and another $10,000+ depending on where you choose to study.

So when you ask for recommendations for those who "don't cost an arm and a leg" what you are opening yourself up for is to be inundated of suggestions for people who have little, if not zero training.

Because people can charge whatever they like, and what is expensive to one person may not seem so to another... but in an unregulated industry, I would suggest that a better question is for recommendations of people who are both trained and effective AND price.

At the end of the day, you are trusting these people with the wellbeing of your animals, and it costs more to get out the less effective person multiple times because they are less effective or ineffective (or that second practitioner to "fix" whatever the first practitioner may have done because some are downright harmful) than it does to just get a quality practitioner in the first place.

I'm not saying budgets don't exist, they do, but nobody ever claimed that having horses was inexpensive and expecting quality practitioners to foot the bill for your hobby is the height of entitlement. If you don't want to dedicate the years and many thousands of $ to learning a particular skill, then money is what buys you the access to someone who did. It's as simple as that.

PS Yes, there are highly qualified and experienced people who charge less than the unqualified or inexperienced. It's not a linear thing, as I said, people can charge what they like... but judging solely on price is probably the worst possible way to choose a professional aside from maybe choosing based on their hair colour or preference in music.
