56% of recent fruit & veg samples tested from Coles, Woolworths & ALDI carried pesticides that are banned in Europe.

Pesticide Action Australia bought 78 fruit and veg samples from Coles, Woolworths and ALDI in 5 cities.

They found 201 pesticide residues from 54 chemicals.

🌶️Capsicums with 2 insecticides that aren’t approved for use on capsicum in Australia!

⚠️44% carried PFAS ‘forever’ pesticides

Last month, our pesticide regulator raised its limit for one particular PFAS pesticide on berries by up to 500 times.
Europe hasn’t approved it at all

That same regulator gets about 88% of its income from the industry it regulates.

Apparently Coles, Woolworths and ALDI all test their produce but none publish the results.

The knee jerk reaction is to blame farmers, but let’s look at who sets the rules & creates the incentive structures that our farmers are forced to operate under.

Coles and Woolies account for about 2/3 of supermarket grocery sales. The competition watchdog found they appear to be among the world’s most profitable supermarkets.

Farmers who work with them are expected to supply blemish-free produce, on razor thin margins - rain, hail or shine.

This is where we as consumers really need to step up.

✅If you’re able to, redirect some of your weekly grocery budget to your local supply chain.
✅Head to farmers market and get to know the people who grow your food.

Ask them questions about it. Make sure they know you care about where your produce comes from & how it’s handled.

As cliche as it sounds, you actually have the power to alter how large supermarkets behave by taking your weekly grocery dollars elsewhere 👩‍🌾
