Do “healthy” foods make you feel worse?

You're trying to look after your gut, but suddenly foods like garlic, onion, legumes, fruit or high fibre foods leave you feeling:

• Bloated
• Gassy
• Uncomfortable
• Constipated or experiencing diarrhoea
• Like your stomach has doubled in size after eating

It doesn't necessarily mean these foods are “bad” or that you need to avoid them forever.

For some people, highly fermentable foods can trigger symptoms because of how they're being digested and fermented in the gut. Your microbiome, gut sensitivity and existing digestive symptoms can all influence how you respond to different foods.

An imbalance within the gut microbiome is often referred to as dysbiosis, and it can be associated with symptoms such as bloating, gas and changes in bowel habits.

Rather than continually removing more and more foods, it may be time to ask why your gut is struggling with them in the first place.

💚 Our naturopaths and clinical nutritionists can help investigate what's happening and create an individual plan to support your digestive health.

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE ❤️

After being such a special part of our little team, Sunny will be leaving Gut Recovery Centre, with her last day being Friday 21 August.

We are so incredibly sad to see her go, but also so happy and excited for Sunny as she moves on to her next adventure.

Sunny walked into our clinic at exactly the right time and very quickly became part of our little family. She has brought so much warmth and kindness into the clinic and has such a beautiful way of making everyone who walks through our doors feel comfortable, cared for and completely at ease.

We know just how loved Sunny is by our clients. So many of you have trusted her to be part of your gut health journey, shared your stories with her, laughed with her and looked forward to seeing her at your appointments. We know we're not the only ones who are going to miss her!

We feel incredibly grateful that Sunny chose to be part of the Gut Recovery Centre journey and for everything she has given to our clinic and our clients during her time with us.

There are still a few appointments available with Sunny before she finishes, so if you'd like to see her one last time, now is your chance.

If you've been seeing Sunny and aren't sure who to book with next, please get in touch. You're welcome to see any of our colon hydrotherapists, and we're always happy to help point you in the right direction.

Sunny, thank you for being such a kind, caring and special part of our little family. We are going to miss having you around the clinic so much, but we can't wait to see what this next chapter brings for you. 💚

Please join us in wishing Sunny all the very best for her next adventure.

Your liver is one of the hardest-working organs in your body.

While many people think of the liver as simply your "detox organ", it actually performs over 500 essential functions every single day.

Some of its most important jobs include:

💚 Producing bile to help digest fats and absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K).

💚 Processing the nutrients absorbed from your small intestine before they enter the rest of your body.

💚 Supporting your body's natural detoxification pathways by breaking down hormones, medications and waste products.

💚 Helping regulate cholesterol, blood sugar and energy production.

Your liver works closely with your gallbladder, small intestine and colon, so when one part of your digestive system isn't functioning optimally, it can affect the whole process.

So how can you support your liver?

🥦 Eat plenty of fibre and colourful vegetables.

💧 Stay well hydrated.

🥩 Eat adequate protein to support your body's natural detoxification pathways.

🚶 Move your body regularly.

💩 Keep your bowels moving every day so waste products can be eliminated efficiently.

😴 Prioritise quality sleep.

🌿 Reduce your toxic load by choosing natural products and limiting processed foods.

💪 Looking after your gut is one of the best ways to support your liver too.

We also now offer coffee enemas as an add on to your colonic appointment. Coffee enemas have traditionally been used to support the liver and bile flow, making them a great addition for those looking to further support their digestive health.

Turns out your appendix isn't so useless after all...

For years, the appendix was thought to be a leftover organ without much purpose. But research is showing it may actually play an important role in our gut microbiome and immune system.

Your appendix is a small pouch attached to the beginning of your large intestine, right near where the small and large intestines meet.

One theory is that it acts as a "safe house" for beneficial gut bacteria, providing a protected environment where good microbes can survive.

After things like diarrhoea or other disruptions to the gut microbiome, these bacteria may then help repopulate the colon and restore microbial balance.

The appendix is also rich in immune tissue, suggesting it plays a role in the relationship between our gut bacteria and immune system.

You can absolutely live without an appendix, but it turns out this little organ may be more useful than we once thought!

💚 Just another reason to take care of your gut.

Your small intestine is around 6 metres long and is where most of the magic happens when it comes to digestion.

It has three sections:

🍏 Duodenum – where food mixes with digestive enzymes and bile to begin breaking down nutrients.

🍏 Jejunum – where most vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream.

🍏 Ileum – absorbs vitamin B12, bile salts and any remaining nutrients before food moves into the large intestine.

Normally, your small intestine contains relatively low levels of bacteria compared to your large intestine.

With SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth), bacteria that are normally found in the large intestine begin growing in the small intestine, where they don't belong. As they ferment food, they can produce excess gas and lead to uncomfortable digestive symptoms.

Common symptoms include:
💨 Bloating (often worse after meals)
💨 Excessive gas
💨 Abdominal discomfort
💨 Constipation or diarrhoea
💨 Food intolerances
💨 Fatigue
💨 Nutrient deficiencies

How can we help?

At Gut Recovery Centre, we take a whole digestive system approach to supporting people with SIBO.

🌿 Naturopathy can help investigate contributing factors and create a personalised treatment plan.

🥗 Clinical Nutrition provides practical dietary guidance to support symptom management while ensuring you continue to meet your nutritional needs.

💧 Colon hydrotherapy can support the function of the lower digestive system 💩 while you work on restoring the health of your small intestine.

Every person with SIBO is different, so finding the right approach starts with understanding what's happening in your gut.

💚 If you're struggling with bloating, gas or ongoing digestive symptoms, we're here to help. Send us a message and we'll help you find the right service to support your gut health.

If you experience:

🔥 Burning in your chest
🔥 Food coming back up after meals
🔥 Frequent burping
🔥 A sour taste in your mouth
🔥 Symptoms that are worse after eating or lying down...

Your stomach may be asking for some extra support.

Your stomach has an important job. It produces stomach acid and digestive enzymes to help break down food, absorb nutrients and protect you from unwanted bacteria.

While reflux is often thought of as having too much stomach acid, it isn't always that simple. In fact, for some people, low stomach acid or poor digestive function may be contributing factors.

There are many reasons why reflux can occur. Rather than simply suppressing stomach acid, supporting healthy digestion and identifying the underlying cause may be an important part of the long-term picture.

Antacids and acid-suppressing medications can provide important short-term relief. However, long-term use may impact digestion and the gut microbiome in some people. If you've been taking these medications for a long time, it's important not to stop them suddenly. A naturopath or clinical nutritionist can work alongside your healthcare provider to help support your digestive function while a gradual reduction plan is implemented.

Rather than simply masking symptoms, understanding why you're experiencing reflux is the first step towards reducing it and improving your digestive health.

💚 If reflux is affecting your quality of life, we're here to help. Our naturopaths and clinical nutritionists can work with you to investigate possible contributing factors and create a personalised plan to support your digestive health.

📚 WHAT DOES YOUR COLON DO?

Your colon, also known as your large intestine, is the final stage of your digestive system.

While your small intestine is responsible for absorbing most of your nutrients, your colon has a very different (but equally important) job.

Your colon is responsible for:

💧 Reabsorbing water and electrolytes back into the body.

🦠 Providing a home for trillions of beneficial bacteria that make up your gut microbiome.

💩 Forming, storing and eliminating waste.

🌿 Supporting your body's natural detoxification and elimination processes.

Your colon has four main sections:

⬆️ Ascending Colon
This is where material from your small intestine first enters the colon. Water absorption begins and beneficial bacteria start fermenting any remaining fibre.

➡️ Transverse Colon
The longest section of the colon, where even more water and nutrients are absorbed while your gut bacteria continue producing beneficial compounds that support your health.

⬇️ Descending Colon
This section stores stool as it gradually moves towards the end of the digestive tract.

🔄 Sigmoid Colon
An S-shaped section that connects the descending colon to the re**um. It stores stool until you're ready to have a bowel movement.

When your colon is functioning well, waste moves through the digestive tract efficiently and is eliminated regularly.

Where does colon hydrotherapy fit in?

Colon hydrotherapy focuses on supporting the health and function of the large intestine.

By gently introducing warm filtered water into the colon, it may help:
💩 Support healthy bowel function.
💩 Encourage regular elimination.
💩 Assist people experiencing constipation or incomplete emptying.
💩 Support your body's natural elimination processes.

Colon hydrotherapy doesn't replace looking after the rest of your digestive system. We believe the best results come from supporting the whole digestive system, from your mouth right through to your colon.

When you think about your gut, what comes to mind?

For most people, it's their stomach.

But your gut is actually made up of several organs that work together every single day to digest your food, absorb nutrients, support your immune system and eliminate waste.

Your digestive system includes:

👄 Your mouth – where digestion begins.

🥣 Your stomach – where food is broken down with stomach acid and digestive enzymes.

💛 Your liver & gallbladder – which produce and release bile to help digest fats.

🌿 Your small intestine – where most nutrients are absorbed.

💩 Your large intestine (colon) – home to trillions of beneficial bacteria and responsible for absorbing water and eliminating waste.

When one part of this system isn't working as it should, it can affect the whole digestive process.

That's why symptoms like bloating, reflux, constipation, diarrhoea and food intolerances often need a deeper look rather than a quick fix.

Throughout August, we'll be helping you get to know your gut better by exploring how each part of your digestive system works, common gut conditions and simple ways to support your digestive health.

💚 If you've been living with digestive symptoms, remember they're not something you simply have to put up with. Understanding your gut is the first step towards supporting it.
