So I did a thing 🤪 I wrote a Curl Guide so you can finally Understand Your Curls!
The Adaptive Curl Method is a step-by-step framework created by curl specialist Kelly Hinton that teaches you how to understand your own curls, so you can get consistently better hair days using techniques that actually fit your lifestyle.
If you've ever felt like curly hair is confusing, you're not alone.
The truth is, most curly hair advice teaches you what works for someone else—not how to understand your own hair.
That's exactly why I created the Adaptive Curl Method.
After more than 10 years as a hairdresser, I've noticed something.
The clients who achieve great curls aren't the ones using the most expensive products. They're the ones who understand why they're doing each step.
The Adaptive Curl Method isn't another strict curly girl routine.
It's a flexible framework that teaches you how to make the right decisions for your own curls.
Instead of copying routines online, you'll learn how to adapt your wash days, products and styling techniques to suit your hair, your lifestyle and the results you actually want.
Because curls shouldn't feel complicated.
Inside you'll discover how to:
✔ Know exactly what your curls need before you style them.
✔ Stop wasting money on products that aren't right for your hair.
✔ Understand why your curls behave differently from wash day to wash day.
✔ Build a routine that works with your lifestyle—not against it.
✔ Get curl results that match your expectations.
✔ Diffuse with confidence for faster drying and better results.
✔ Understand what your curl pattern is actually telling you
✔ Troubleshoot frizz, flat roots, lack of definition and inconsistent results.
This isn't a guide filled with generic curly hair advice.
It's the same education I give my clients while they're sitting in my salon chair—written in a way that's easy to understand and simple to follow at home.
This is a great way to learn from me when you can't get in to see me due to being on maternity leave or living somewhere other than Hobart, or to refresh what you have learnt from me in the past.

Hairdressers: where would you cut?
I cut along the bottom line because after sitting and consulting with her, that's where she was happy to start to her hair journey with me. Building that trust is so important and whilst her hair would have looked its fullest at the top line, once I outlined her options at each line so she had full awareness of the reality of her hair's situation, she still chose to stay long.
I use the principles in the to help guide these conversations and understand a clients desires for their curls. If you would like to gain confidence navigating these situations, my Curl Confidence Workshop in August is for you!

This is new territory for me but I'm so excited to be running a Curl Confidence Workshop for hairdressers! Im going on maternity leave in a couple months and it will be the second time I've had to leave a curly clientele and Im very familiar with how those clients grieve the loss of someone who's confident with their hair. SO! I thought, in a season of change for myself, let's go big and help create a bigger community of Curly Confident stylists 😄
My approach to curls is lifestyle focused, its a method that works in regular salons, and is not about becoming a 'curl specialist' its about having strong fundamentals that support curly clients and are adaptive and flexible and not rigid to one set methodology. This is what I call The Adaptive Curl Method.
If you've ever had a moment of "oh no" when a curly client walked in, or a thought of "I dont know how to do her hair better" or had someone ask you about their curls and you struggled to be confident in what you answered... hi!
The Adaptive Curl Method will give you a framework to lose those nerves and set you up for success every time ❤️
It will be held on the 17th August 2026, in Hobart, Tasmania at MINKIES HAIR | GLENORCHY
Thank you so much to Gary O&M for helping to make this happen!
I look forward to seeing you there!

A new client sits in your chair and this is their hair. What would you do?
Understandably, most stylists would want to cut her hair in line with the missing chunk, making her just below shoulder length.
Thats the problem. If we as stylists don't take the time to actually listen to what the client wants, we end up just being another traumatising experience on a curly client's bingo card.
My client really wanted long hair. She has a fine density and had worked hard to get it this long. There had been an incident with either a dog or young child that resulted with the missing chunk. She was not emotionally prepared to lose all her hair and walk out with a shoulder length bob. Me imposing that on her would have left her in tears. So instead, I actually walked her through the issues in her existing shape and listed options to address them and allowed her to choose which one she was comfortable with. She chose to keep her length, accept that there was a hole, return for more frequent cuts to slowly work towards closing the gap, and allowed me to shape her into a more rounded shape to "hide" the hole over the rectangular shape which made it more apparent, and softly add layers to further blend the whole shape.
This type of communication builds trust and confidence. It's not always about fixing the problem the way we as hairdressers would want to. It's about working with what will actually make the client happy.
