The best thing about working with elderly clients is the stories I get to hear. Some funny, some sad, but mostly utterly fascinating🧡.

In 1946, a young Czech runner named Emil Zátopek crossed the finish line in Oslo and quietly broke his country’s 5,000-meter record. No one outside Czechoslovakia paid much attention yet.

Two years later in London, he returned from a brutal 10,000-meter gold to grab silver in the 5,000. But it wasn’t just the medals people remembered it was his tortured expression, his fight, his refusal to back down.

By 1951, Emil wasn’t just winning. He was breaking everything. World records in the 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, even the 30,000 meters. And he didn’t do it with grace he did it with grit. His face twisted in pain, his style messy and chaotic. But always, he won.

Then came Helsinki, 1952.
Three events.
Three golds.
Three Olympic records.
And yes one of them was the marathon. A race he’d never run before. He asked the world-record holder midrace if the pace was okay. When told it was too slow, Emil smiled… and sped up. He crossed the line two minutes ahead of everyone.

By 1956, injuries slowed him down. But even from a hospital bed, he trained. He finished sixth in the Melbourne marathon, then stepped away for good.

Zátopek’s running style? Ugly. His breathing? Loud. His training? Brutal.
But his heart? Unmatched.
He trained in snow. He wore work boots. He shared everything he knew.

And through it all, he showed the world what happens when spirit outpaces style.

Alzheimer's disease, where damaged nerve cells result in cognitive decline and memory loss has a new exciting study looking into treatments without the side effects.

Researchers focused on gossypetin, flavanoid found in a hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa). Mice with Alzheimer's were given gossyptin for three months and their cognition were returned to normal. The researchers expect that gossypectin from hybiscus will contribute to a safe and affordable drug for Alzheimer's, but in the meantime, Hibiscus tea won't hurt!
