Matt’s review sums up what I want the sweat test to be about.
Yes, the test gives you data you can’t really get any other way.
But the real value is what we do with it.
We look at your current fuelling and hydration strategy, your upcoming races, what’s been working, what hasn’t — and then combine that with your sweat test result to build a plan that’s actually specific to you.
Not just a number.
A clear, evidence-based strategy you can take into training and race day with confidence.
And importantly, you don’t just leave with a result — you leave with a plan, follow-up support, and a better understanding of how to make decisions for yourself.
Science. Experience. Your own data.
Know your numbers → create your exact plan.

The sweat test itself is pretty simple.
No treadmill.
No workout.
No guessing.
First, we look at your upcoming races, your current fuelling and hydration plan, and any issues you’ve been having in training or racing.
Then we test.
Induce → Collect → Analyse.
A small machine makes a tiny patch of skin on your forearm sweat, we collect that sweat, then run the sample through the analyser to measure your sweat sodium concentration.
That number then becomes part of the bigger picture.
We use your result, your race demands and your current strategy to build a more personalised hydration and fuelling plan around your real data.
The test is simple.
What we do with the number is where the value is.

Hydration isn’t just about drinking more water. 💧
When you’re racing or training for hours, there’s a lot going on.
You’re losing fluid through sweat.
You’re losing sodium.
Your core temperature is rising.
You’re burning through carbohydrate.
And eventually, all of that can start affecting how well you perform.
The tricky part?
Those losses aren’t the same for every athlete.
One athlete might sweat 500mL an hour.
Another might lose more than 2L.
One might lose very little sodium in that sweat.
Another could be losing more than 2,000mg per litre.
That’s why a good race plan isn’t just:
“Drink a bottle every hour.”
It’s about knowing the numbers that are specific to you — then combining your hydration, sodium and fuelling strategy into one plan.
💧 Know your sweat rate
🧂 Know your sodium concentration
⚡ Know your carbohydrate target
Then build the plan around the athlete.
Not the other way around.
Know your numbers → create your exact plan.

Two athletes. Same race. Same conditions.
One loses 250mg of sodium per litre of sweat.
The other loses 2,400mg.
That’s almost a 10× difference. 🤯
And these aren’t hypothetical numbers — they’re the lowest and highest sodium concentrations I’ve tested.
It’s exactly why generic advice like “one electrolyte tab per bottle” can be miles off for the individual athlete.
Some athletes simply don’t lose much sodium.
Others lose a LOT.
The problem?
You can’t tell which one you are just by how much you sweat.
A quick, exercise-free sweat test measures your sodium concentration and gives us one of the key numbers we need to build your hydration plan.
💧 Know your numbers.
🧂 Replace what you actually lose.
🏁 Race with a plan.

5 signs you might be a salty sweater — before you even book a test.
👕 White marks on dark clothing
👀 Sweat that stings your eyes
🏝️ Skin that feels gritty afterward
👅 Sweat that tastes noticeably salty
🚰 Cramping even when you've been drinking plenty.
None of these give you an exact number — but if a few sound familiar, there's a good chance your sodium losses are higher than average, and generic hydration advice is working against you, not for you.

Making a fuelling and hydration plan for yourself can feel daunting. It doesn't need to be.
Every plan I build with an athlete comes down to the same three steps: know your numbers, know your products, know your logistics.
Numbers — how many carbs per hour, what sodium concentration you want in your fluid, and how much of that fluid you're actually drinking.
Products — the gels, chews, real food or drink mix that hit those numbers. Sodium can come premixed into your fluid or as capsules alongside plain water — just know how much is in what you're using.
Logistics — how you're carrying it, whether you're restocking from aid stations or a support crew, and how you're reminding yourself to actually take it out on course.
Walk through those three steps for any event and you'll have a plan that holds up on race day.
If you want your own numbers — your actual sweat sodium concentration and sweat rate, not an estimate — that's exactly what a sweat test gives you. I'm testing in Melbourne on September 19. Link in bio to book, or drop me a question below.

"Highly recommend to anyone serious about endurance performance."
That's Lucille, a trail runner, after her sweat test. Thorough session, results explained clearly, and a plan she could apply straight to her training — not generic advice.
That's the whole point of testing: real numbers, not guesswork, built into a plan you can actually use.

Race season is close — Melbourne Marathon, Around the Bay and the Geelong Running Festival are all just weeks away.
Every hydration & fuelling plan we build with an athlete comes down to the same three steps.
1️⃣ Know your numbers — carbs per hour, fluid per hour, and your sodium concentration.
2️⃣ Know your products — what's actually going to hit those numbers, whether that's gels, mix, capsules or real food.
3️⃣ Nail the logistics — how you're carrying it, how much you're starting with, and when you're actually taking it.
Skip any one of the three and the plan falls apart on race day.
We walk through all three with you in every sweat test — link in bio to book in Melbourne or Geelong.

Water alone won't get you to the start line properly hydrated. Sodium is what makes it stick.
Sodium acts like a magnet for fluid — the more your blood absorbs, the more fluid it holds onto. That's the whole idea behind preloading: 500ml of a strong sodium drink about 12 hours out (the night before), then the same dose again race morning, finishing roughly an hour before the start. Your body absorbs what it can; the rest gets excreted through the kidneys — including in that nervous pre-race wee we all know too well.
That alone buys you real time before cramping, fading, or power loss kick in — before you've even taken a drink on course. Layer in a personalised in-race hydration plan on top, and even though you can't replace everything you're losing 1:1, minimising those losses pushes the negative effects even further away.

We've tested runners, cyclists and triathletes all over Victoria. Here's the actual spread we see:
Sweat rate: 0.4L/hr → 2.5L/hr+
Sodium concentration: 250mg/L → 2,400mg/L
That's up to a 9.6x difference in sodium losses between two athletes doing the exact same race in the exact same conditions.
If your hydration plan comes from the label on a sports drink bottle, it's built for the average. Not for you.
