Straight outta the Kimberley and bringing the energy every time he steps on the court 💥 Known for his explosive dunks and fast-paced game, J'Quarn creates opportunities for his teammates and never plays at half speed.

But it's not just about the highlight reel. J'Quarn carries his identity and where he comes from onto every court he plays on — and says Binar has become more than a club, it's family.

His journey from the Kimberley hasn't been easy, but with his Dad pushing him to reach his potential and the Binar community behind him, he's only getting started.

His advice to the next generation: "If there's an opportunity, take it. Be a sponge, soak up all the information and learn as much as you can."

🏀 Coach Spotlight: Andrew Vlahov, U18 Boys 1

Perth Wildcat. Olympian. Binar Chairperson. You could fill this caption with résumé — instead, we asked him the same kind of questions we ask every coach in this series, and he answered like every other coach in this series: humble, generous with his time, and all about the players in front of him.

"There are no shortcuts to greatness" — words he lives by, on and off the court.

We're incredibly grateful to have Andrew not only helping lead Binar, but giving his time to coach and mentor the next generation of Binar athletes.

Meet Ja'Melia Hill from our U21 Girls team.

Basketball has been part of Ja'Melia's life for the past 10 years, with her family encouraging her to get involved in sport and supporting her every step of the way.

For Ja'Melia, being part of Binar is about supporting one another, making sure everyone feels included, and creating great memories together. And with basketball being a big part of her family, she gets to share the game with the people closest to her.

Basketball has taught her plenty along the way, including teamwork, determination and resilience.

Her advice to the younger girls coming through Binar?

"Always believe in yourself, work hard and have fun. You never know how far basketball can take you."

And who doesn't get hype to a bit of The Wiggles before a game!? 😂🎶

🏀 MEET THE COACH | Karen Hayden

For Karen Hayden, basketball has always been about much more than the game.

What began through her own children has grown into more than 16 years as a basketball family, spanning domestic basketball, WABL, State representation, SBL/NBL1 and countless opportunities to support young people through sport.

Along the way, Karen has seen first-hand the challenges and barriers that can exist within the basketball pathway. Those experiences have fuelled her passion for creating better opportunities for the next generation, particularly for our Aboriginal community.

As the U21 Girls coach, Karen is passionate about building confidence, self-determination, respect and pride in her players, while reminding them that who they are and who they represent matters every time they step onto the court.

For Karen, coaching is about helping young people believe in themselves, face challenges and understand that they are capable of achieving great things.

And her commitment to community extends well beyond the Binar court. Through her family's long involvement in Indigenous basketball carnivals, her work within WABL and her role on the Aboriginal Advisory Council at Basketball WA, Karen continues to advocate for greater opportunity and meaningful change for our community.

When asked what Binar means to her, Karen summed it up perfectly:
"Binar is not just a basketball club; it is so much more than that. It's a family that represents culture, pride, and community."

We're incredibly proud to have Karen leading our U21 Girls and grateful for the experience, passion and care she continues to give to the next generation.

The Alone Family — A Basketball Legacy Continues 🏀💙

There are some families whose impact on basketball goes far beyond the scoreboard — and the Alone family is certainly one of them.

In our inaugural Binar Maali WABL season, we are incredibly proud to have Spencer Alone Snr, Karen Hayden, Spencer Alone Jnr and Hayley Alone all coaching within our program.

With a rich family history in basketball, they bring an incredible wealth of knowledge, experience and passion to the young people they coach.

For more than 20 years, Spencer and Karen have been running Aboriginal basketball carnivals and creating opportunities for Aboriginal communities through basketball. Their children have also grown up through the WABL system, with both Spencer Jnr and Hayley going on to play NBL1 basketball.

Now, after making such an impact on the court, it is amazing to see them making an even greater impact from the sideline.

The Alone family will leave a lasting legacy in Aboriginal community basketball and now, as part of Binar Maali, they are helping shape the future of WABL as well.

We are incredibly proud to have the Alone family as part of our inaugural season.
