Here's something a lot of dreadheads don't talk about enough, wash day for locs isn't the same as washing loose hair. The technique, the products you use and what happens after you rinse all have a much bigger impact on your loc health than most people realise.

If your locs feel heavier than they should, have that tell-tale lingering smell, or just feel a bit off between appointments, there's usually a reason. And the good news is, it's often fixable once you know what to look for.

A few things worth knowing about wash day for locs:

Your locs actually need to be washed. The idea that dreadlocks and cleanliness don't mix is one of the most persistent myths in the loc world, and it does real damage. Healthy locs are clean locs.

The wrong products leave residue behind. Regular shampoos and conditioners are formulated for loose hair. What works beautifully on loose strands can build up inside your locs over time, leaving that heavy, waxy or gunky texture that's hard to shift once it sets in.

Thorough rinsing matters more than most people think. Locs hold onto product. Getting a proper, thorough rinse, really working the water all the way through, is part of good wash technique, not just a nice extra step.

Damp locs are a problem. Your locs take significantly longer to dry than loose hair. If they're not drying all the way through after every wash, that moisture can sit inside the loc, and that's where odour tends to come from.

None of this is complicated once you know what to look for. Wash day should feel like genuine care, not a guessing game.
