When most animals were slaughtered locally nothing went to waste. Bones, hooves, knuckles, carcasses and tough meat went into the stock pot and filled the house with the aroma of love.

Today we buy individual filets and boneless chicken breasts, or grab fast food on the run and broth has disappeared from our diets.

Traditional broths have been replaced with meat-like flavors made in the laboratory known as MSG which is in all of the bouillon cubes, dehydrated soup mixes, sauce mixes and stock you can buy from your local supermarket.

In 1957, scientists found that mice became blind and obese when MSG was administered by feeding tube.

When homemade broths were pushed out by cheap substitutes, an important source of minerals disappeared from our diets, not to mention the serious health problems posed by MSG being added in.

So why is bone broth so great?

- it contains gelatin which facilitates digestion by attracting digestive juices to food in the gut.
- it contains minerals in a form the body can absorb easily—not just calcium but also magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and trace minerals.
- it contains the broken down material from cartilage and tendons – stuff like chondroitin sulfates and glucosamine (now sold as expensive supplements for arthritis and joint pain).
- it supports overall digestion, intestinal functioning, and the mucosal lining.
- as well as supporting bone, muscle, ligament, tendon, and skin health.

Plant-based broths are important too. They don’t have the same properties as animal or fish broths, but they contain numerous vitamins and minerals.

I was invited to deliver a workshop at BGC Housing Group Wellness Festival Week - an awesome initiative that sparks inspiration and action to build a healthy workplace.

We covered nutrition and sleep, two topics from the 6 Foundation Principles of Health. The participants left with tangible, actionable ideas, strategies and practices proven to make a big difference to energy, focus and our overall sense of wellbeing.

I like to get a show of hands at the beginning of the workshop to see how many of the 6 Foundational Principles people are currently focusing on. With life being so busy and other things taking priority over our health, it is understandable that on average people are only addressing 1 to 2 of these areas of their health.

I work with both my one on one clients and corporate clients to build gradual and sustainable steps towards a more balanced approach to the 6 Foundation Principles. I drive the focus of my coaching towards small, daily habits that do not overload our already overloaded systems.

When clients stick to the process, they see huge results that are sustainable for the long-term. No magic pills or quick fixes offered, just education, understanding and accountability to live in alignment with the beautiful basics of health.

Thank you to the friendly and engaging group who attended. It is always a joy to talk with a group that is eager to learn and ask questions.

Did you know that 70% of our body’s energy is spent on digestion? 💩

Or that we have 10x the number of bacteria in our gut than we do human cells? 🐛

Now that you know that, don't you think it is important that we feed the beneficial bacteria and aid our body to digest food as much as possible?

This is where fermented foods come in. A modern Western diet heavy on processed foods can upset the balance of our gut microbiota, which can lead to unpleasant symptoms and long-term health issues.

Fermented foods can help.

Not to mention, sauerkraut and kimchi (fermented cabbage) has 20 times more vitamin C than fresh cabbage! Plus B complex vitamins and vitamin K!

Some of my favourites are:

Sauerkraut: literally translates to “sour cabbage".. If you don’t mind chopping, make your own!

Kimchi: There are hundreds of varieties of the traditional Korean fermented side dish, commonly made from a base of napa cabbage, radish, scallions and spices.

Kefir: This fermented dairy drink is made using kefir grains (a combination of bacteria and yeast). The end result? A slightly fizzy, tangy drink that’s thinner than yogurt. Find it in the dairy section.

Choose consistency over perfection.

We just have to be consistent over a long period of time to see results.

In health.
In business.
In sports.
In new hobbies.
In everything.

There will be periods of time when things aren’t going right, or you just don’t feel up to your best. Take a break, go easy on yourself, but don't give up. It is consistency over a long period of time that counts.

In business, this could not be more true. It is showing up each and every day, being persistent and never throwing in the towel that gets the results. Sure, there are weeks and even months where things aren’t flourishing, but you can't fail until you quit.

So many learnings of running a business can relate to our health goals. Just keep going. 🙌

As my mum would always tell me "where there is a will, there is a way". My clients come to me with enough will and I help them find the way.

This delicious Chicken Pesto Pasta was made using the green leafy bits from fennel (fennel fronds). 🌿

I added sundried tomatoes without any vegetable oils of course (harder to find than you'd think), and pine nuts - always a winning combo. I used zucchini ribbons for the pasta. It was the bomb.com.

I was taught by my mum and nonna how to use every bit of food. Nothing goes to waste in an Italian kitchen. Whether you ferment, pickle or marinate the food, it all gets used! I've learned to get creative with all parts of a vegetable and turn any leftovers into a tasty new meal.

This is such an important aspect of healthy cooking and sustainability - two of my biggest passions. When you buy organic food, you don't want a single bit of it going to waste because you feel a connection to the farmers and a higher value for the food, so instead of throwing away and discarding bits, you use as much of the precious nutrients as you can. On the other hand, when you buy cheap "food" (I say "food" because a lot of what people buy can hardly be considered food), that you intuitively know has no value, you are more careless and likely to throw it out.

So, up your game. Spend more on groceries = quality over quantity and you will waste less. And before you tell me you can't afford to spend more on food, go and read my recent post. Do you really need your nails done every month? Or that new car? I doubt it :)

Getting clear on who you are and what you stand for as a human being makes you very aware of what directs your 3 precious resources - money, time and energy.

An eye opening exercise I have my clients do is to write down their core values. Most of them have health in their top 5... but then we dig deeper and see the way they are living doesn't reflect that.

Your core values should determine how you choose to invest your time, energy and money. If my clients are choosing to spend their 3 resources in line with their core values, then great. Although, this is very rarely the case.

Often, we use the alcohol, the new outfit, the nails, the new car etc. as a way to make ourselves feel better in the moment... but it's just a bandaid for something deeper and uncomfortable.

When do people really live in alignment with their value for health? When it is threatened. As sad as that is, it is true. Speak to anyone facing a serious health problem, you can bet they are now spending all of their precious resources to get healthy again.

When your values are clear, decisions are easy because you simply ask "does this align with my values?" Aligning your core values with how you choose to invest your time, energy and money moves you closer to living joyously, with less worries and anxiety.

Investing your resources in material things might make you feel good in the moment but it will lead to more worries, anxiety and eventually serious health problems.

So take a look through your most recent financial transactions and ask yourself, does this align with my values?

Go through your calendar and ask yourself, does my schedule align with my values?

Go through your friend list and ask yourself, do these people support my values? You can blame your ending friendships on me :) haha

Accountability is the single most powerful tool for discipline. It is like a cheat code when it comes to sticking to our goals.

The difference between reaching any desired goal and not is consistency. Accountability works to keep us consistent.

One piece of feedback I get from my clients, again and again, is how much they value the accountability and frequent check-ins in their program. Our check-in sessions help to align focus on the right priorities at the right time and stop us from distractions that can otherwise be overwhelming.

In my business, the best decision I ever made was to get coaching. I work with my coach to set goals and the actions I need to take in my business to reach those goals. That support and accountability helped me go from running a part-time business to a full-time business.

We all know what we should be doing, but we don't do it. The missing link is accountability.

Accountability can look like:
✨️ Make it public - declare to family/friends about your goal
✨ ️Make a financial commitment - when you pay, you pay attention
✨️ Set a deadline - not too far into the future
✨️ Book into a class - it is much easier to show up if you have a class in your schedule
✨️ Partner with a friend - use each other to stay motivated
