Melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation that presents as patches of darkened skin, most commonly across the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and chin.

It is driven primarily by hormonal fluctuation. Pregnancy, oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy are all associated with melasma, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the mask of pregnancy.

Sun exposure significantly worsens it, as UV stimulates the same melanin producing cells already overactive in melasma prone skin. Genetics and skin type also play a role in susceptibility.

Unlike other forms of pigmentation, melasma tends to be more resistant to treatment and more likely to recur, particularly with sun exposure or hormonal changes. This makes ongoing management as important as the initial treatment approach.
