“I don’t like washing my hair. Sits better with buildup in it.”
Every guy’s got a version of this line.
And look, you’re not wrong that it sits better. Day 3 hair is easier to style than clean hair. But that’s not your hair working. That’s oil, sweat and old product giving it weight.
You’re basically styling with dirt.
Clean hair feels impossible because there’s nothing in it. No grip, no weight, nothing. Most guys take that as proof washing ruins their hair and go back to skipping it.
Quick bit of science. Washing lifts the cuticle, the outer layer of the strand. Conditioner seals it back down and keeps moisture in. Shampoo without conditioner leaves it open, which is where the dry straw feeling comes from. So “just shampoo” isn’t the answer either.
Wash it, condition it, then a small amount of a styling product in it while it’s damp. Does the same job the buildup was doing. Doesn’t smell like a gym bag.
Your hair’s not hard to manage. It’s just clean.
