The Hot Mess
For burnout babes, hormonal hotties + mood-swinging survivors 🧠
Glue to hold your s**t-show together 💅
Functional medicine, psych, science + sass 💁🏽♀️
Your period isn’t just an event happening in your uterus.
It’s one of the most visible outputs of a conversation happening between your brain, pituitary, ovaries and the rest of your body. 🧠🩷
Your hypothalamus is constantly taking in information about your internal environment — including energy availability, stress, sleep, metabolism and illness.
And your reproductive system responds accordingly.
Because from a biological perspective, reproduction is expensive.
If the brain is receiving signals that resources are limited, stress is high, energy availability is inadequate or the body is under significant physiological pressure…
It can turn reproductive signalling DOWN.
And that can mean less consistent ovulation.
Which matters because ovulation is what creates the gland that produces progesterone, the hormone that helps keep the uterine lining supported and stable after ovulation.
The message?
If your cycle has gone completely feral… it might be time to ask:
🧠 “What signals is my brain receiving about the state of my body?”
Rather than blaming your ovaries for the whole damn s**t-show. 😂
Looks like sugar…
✨ But it’s actually sweet therapy for your s**t show.
This is glycine sprinkled over my homemade muesli and berries, and honestly? It’s one of the most underrated amino acids in nutritional medicine.
Why I love it:
🤍 Performs more biochemical functions than almost any other amino acid.
🦴 Major building block for collagen.
🛡️ Required to make glutathione, your body’s master antioxidant.
🧠 Helps regulate NMDA receptors, calming an overexcited brain.
😴 Acts as a calming (inhibitory) neurotransmitter to support deeper, more restorative sleep.
📈 May naturally increase growth hormone release during sleep.
💛 Supports bile production for healthy fat digestion.
🚛 Supports the liver’s detoxification pathways.
❤️ May help lower triglycerides.
🔥 Helps regulate inflammation.
🧠 May improve learning, memory and memory retrieval.
⚡ May reduce fatigue and the frequency of headaches.
😊 Supports healthy serotonin production.
🍽️ Helps inhibit orexin - aka. the neurotransmitter that promotes wakefulness and food-seeking behaviour, which may support both sleep and appetite regulation.
Not bad for something that tastes just the right amount of sweet.
Sometimes the most powerful therapies aren’t the flashy ones… they’re the white powder on your breakfast. 😉

“Good news! Your liver enzymes are normal!”
Except…
Are they really? 👀
I’ve had 2 clients in the last 2 weeks with LOW ALP (alkaline phosphatase).
The good news?
👉 It doesn’t scream “liver damage.”
The WTF moment?
👉 ALP is WAY more than just a liver enzyme.
Most people think ALP = liver.
But this little enzyme is made in a bunch of places:
🦴 Bones
🫀 Liver
🟢 Gallbladder
🫘 Kidneys
🥗 Intestines
🤍 Even white blood cells
And it actually has some pretty important jobs.
ALP is involved in:
✨ Protein phosphorylation (helping switch proteins on and off inside cells)
✨ Bone mineralisation (helping build and maintain healthy bone)
✨ Cell growth, repair and normal cell turnover
So when ALP is LOW…
It’s not something to ignore.
It can be a sneaky clue that your body may not have the nutrients or conditions it needs to do its job properly.
Things that can be associated with low ALP include:
🚩 Coeliac disease
🚩 Low protein intake or malnutrition
🚩 Hypothyroidism
🚩 B12 deficiency
🚩 Low zinc
🚩 Low magnesium
🚩 Low vitamin C
🚩 Low phosphorus
And here’s where it gets interesting…
Because the symptoms can look like “life”:
😴 Exhaustion
🧠 Brain fog
💭 Memory issues
😔 Low mood or anxiety
💇 Hair changes
🩹 Slow healing
🤧 Getting sick constantly
💅 Skin, nail and hair issues
💪 Muscle cramps or twitching
😬 Poor stress tolerance
For example…
Low B12 may show up as:
🧠 Brain fog
😴 Fatigue
🦶 Tingling or numbness
😔 Mood changes
🧍 Balance issues
Low vitamin C?
🩹 Slow wound healing
🩸 Easy bruising
🦷 Bleeding gums
😩 Fatigue
🤕 Achy joints
Low zinc?
🤧 Constant infections
💇 Hair loss
👅 Changes in taste or smell
🩹 Slow wound healing
😬 Skin flare ups
Low magnesium?
💪 Muscle cramps
😬 Anxiety
❤️ Palpitations
🤕 Headaches
😴 Poor sleep
Your “normal” blood test might actually be full of clues.
The body is always talking…
You just need someone to translate the Hot Mess language. 💅

THIS vs THAT 👀
The menopause transition isn’t a single event, it’s a drawn out hormonal s**t show that changes every system of your body.
The support you need at the beginning may not be the support you need a few years later.
💙 MenoBalance → My go-to when stress, anxiety, sleep disruption and the hormonal chaos of the transition are front and centre.
💗 MenoFemme → Often my pick when a declining oestrogen picture is driving hot flushes, pain fu***ng everywhere, dryness endless CRAFT moments and other random body weirdness.
There is no one size fits all experience, so to be effective, treatment needs to be tailored to your unique brand of s**t show 💁🏽♀️
And decoding s**t show us what Hot Mess Hotties do best!

🍒 Consider this ..
Maybe your body isn’t broken.
Maybe it’s not “malfunctioning.”
Maybe it’s doing exactly what it’s was designed to do…
🔥 Slowing you down because you’ve been running on empty.
🔥 Raising inflammation because something needs your attention.
🔥 Making you exhausted because survival has become the priority.
🔥 Shutting down hormones because now isn’t the time to make a baby.
We spend so much time trying to silence symptoms that we forget to ask…
“What are you trying to tell me?”
Your body doesn’t wake up one day and choose chaos.
It responds to stress.
It responds to nutrient deficiencies.
It responds to trauma.
It responds to poor sleep.
It responds to infections.
It responds to toxins.
It responds to what it’s exposed to every single day.
Symptoms aren’t always the enemy.
Often, they’re the smoke alarm.
Stop smashing the alarm with another band-aid treatment.
Start looking for the fire.
Your body is intelligent.
Your body is adaptive.
It’s not trying to ruin your life.
It’s trying to save it.
Maybe it’s time you listened 💖
Luxury isn’t the opposite of therapy, babe… it’s the cherry on top. 💖
At The Hot Mess Studio, we don’t believe you should have to choose between feeling better and feeling pampered.

🚨 “Your blood tests are normal.”
…But what does normal actually mean?
Here’s the bit most people are never told.
Standard laboratory reference ranges are established by identifying the central 95% of results from an ‘apparently’ healthy reference population. That means around 2.5% of ‘healthy’ people will naturally fall below the range and 2.5% above it.
Yep, reference ranges are based on statistics, not on whether you feel amazing, exhausted, or somewhere in between.
But here’s the catch…
Who actually gets blood tests?
Most people don’t book a blood test just for fun.
They’re usually ordered because someone has symptoms, a chronic health condition, takes medication that needs monitoring, has risk factors, or their doctor is investigating something.
And considering more than half of Australian adults live with at least one chronic health condition…
I’m not sure I’d be aiming for “normal.” 😉
That’s why, at The Hot Mess Studio, we don’t just ask:
“Is it inside the reference range?”
We ask:
💎 Is it optimal?
💎 Does it match your symptoms?
💎 Is there a pattern developing before disease appears?
Because waiting until a biomarker becomes abnormal often means you’ve missed the opportunity to identify dysfunction much earlier.
Your blood tests tell a story.
Don’t stop reading after the word “normal.”
At what point did we decide that every minute of our lives had to be “productive”? 🤔
At what point did we become so afraid of what someone - anyone - might think? Or worse… when did we start criticising ourselves before anyone else even got the chance?
Somewhere between paying bills, answering emails, raising tiny humans, chasing deadlines, and folding the same damn washing for the 47th time… we stopped doing things simply because they made us feel alive.
We stopped dancing.
We stopped painting.
We stopped climbing trees.
We stopped singing in the shower like we were headlining a world tour.
And honestly?
That’s not just sad…
It’s bad for your health.
Play isn’t childish. It’s biology.
✨ It boosts dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins.
✨ It lowers stress hormones.
✨ It supports your immune system.
✨ It improves sleep.
✨ It helps regulate blood sugar and hormones.
✨ It builds resilience.
✨ It literally helps shift your body out of survival mode and back into repair mode.
Healing doesn’t always look like green smoothies, supplements, or meditation.
Sometimes healing looks like dancing around your lounge room to Madonna.
Sometimes it looks like laughing until you snort.
Sometimes it looks like doing something completely “unproductive” simply because it makes your soul happy.
So here’s your permission slip…
Go do that thing you used to love before adulthood, and your inner critic, got in the way.
Your nervous system will thank you.
PS: Low light, eyes closed and caption in front because I’m still working on getting my inner critic to shut the f*ck up. 💖
