When we were impatient and paid the price!
When my son had done some Uni and was going on a 6month working holiday to South America. I had family over for Pizza the night he was leaving, had most things prepped well and then!
I did not have the plates out to put the pizzas on, pizzas in the oven so I became in an instant a dipstick. I ran in the house and as i was transitioning from the carpet to the tiles already moving to turn into the kitchen, my legs went! I hit fluid on the tiles and went down as I was rotating into the kitchen causing a spiral load through my wrist with the resulting "snap, crackle and pop"
A few profanities escaped my mouth at the point of impact and having broken my arm twice before I had a good idea as to what had just happened. I had a sling put on my arm to brace it, sat on the couch with a beer whilst I got my head around what I had just done.
My nephew a very good cook took over Pizza duties, someone else got the plates and we continued.
I knew going to hospital straight away would not achieve anything other than confirm that I did a really good job this time. I was dropped off at 10pm or so to RPH emergency and began the process. The Triage nurse tried to handle my wrist to my displeasure, soon into the treatment area and x-rays confirmed the worst.
The registrar reset my wrist and had it plastered, the orthopedic lady came around an hour or so later and did the same, at the end suggesting that with my job surgery was the best option.
Saw the surgeon on Wednesday and operated on Thursday morning, all went well.
6 weeks in a plaster and time to re-hab. I was told that I would probably not get full range of motion back within my Right wrist ever, but with good work applying scar tissue massage to the area as soon as the cast was off my range may be only a couple of degrees off my left side.
Essentially if we work at things and find people to help us with the right knowledge, anything is possible.
I went against something that my parents told me when I was young and paid a price for it! "Dont run inside!"

Re-hab?
What why and how?

What, re-hab from muscular injury requires a protocol to ensure good recovery. A step by step one so that the result is almost guaranteed.

Why, so many people try to come back from muscular injuries but fail or relapse! a good program will reduce or eliminate the relapse. At times a little patience initially gets a faster and stronger outcome.

How? Follow the 5 step process for the best results, this is backed by understanding Anatomy and Physiology.

1. Eliminate spasms and hypercontraction's within the soft tissues. Remedial Massage fits well here.
2. Restore proper biomechanics (Gait Patterning and movement exercises) A Physiotherapist or Biomechanist are good to help here.
3. Restore flexibility to the tissues. (Stretching, yoga)
4. Rebuild strength to the injured tissues. (weight training)
5. Rebuild endurance (Aerobic exercise).

Some people start at stage 4 or 5 first, this is a common failure, to strengthen a muscle we must tear it down to build it up stronger. So if the muscle is still tight we tear down said tight muscle and build it tighter! BAD move. Loose relaxed muscles are more responsive to load with minimal injury potential where the load is progressive. Yes we build the load up slowly over weeks or months depending on the severity of the injury.

Most importantly, have someone within whom you trust to guide the process, you need 1 person overall guiding the re-hab, not 3, 4 or 5!

Sports Massage can make a difference with stretching and other therapies.

If we look at anatomy and physiology, we can start to appreciate value for rehab options we engage in.

LOOSE MUSCLES THE POSITIVES
1. Increase joint range of motion
2. allows greater storage of nutrients and oxygen
3.Less energy wastage
4. enhances better lymphatic and venous return
5. Maximizes available power potential
6. Less friction/resistance over the joints
7. Less potential joint degeneration
8. Lessons the likelihood of injury.

TIGHT MUSCLES THE NEGATIVES
1. Joint range of motion is restricted
2. Restricts maximal nutrient/oxygen storage
3. Decreases energy, it takes energy to keep muscles tight
4. Restricts lymphatic and venous return
5. Can cause or lead to muscle cramps/tears
6. Reduces maximum available power output
7. Carrying around unproductive muscle mass
8. Increases the predisposition towards potential injury.

In short are you doing everything possible to achieve your dreams?

Injuries continued,
Acute or chronic?

Acute, A sudden injury generally done with intensity, eg sprinting or a similar ballistic activity. Torn muscle that often happens with a bang.

Chronic, An injury generally with weeks or even months for it to rear its head. Distance events are the major source for these types of injuries. Also referred to as an overuse type of injury. Tendonitis and such injuries that start as a ni**le, if left untreated these can blow out the longer we leave them.

Injuries, what types are there and how do we differentiate as to what we have?
1 Intrinsic or extrinsic.

Intrinsic, an injury that has happened from within the body, a muscle tear or overuse injury caused from us working out or overloading our muscular skeletal system to a point of pain.

Extrinsic, an injury that has been caused by an external influence, strike/blow/load. This type of injury is harder to prepare for as it has factors outside of our control.
