5 Things I Wish Everyone Knew About Celiac Disease
1. Eating gluten free is not a choice I wanted to make.
I didn’t wake up one day and decide gluten was my villain origin story. It’s an autoimmune disease with genetic roots. My body revolted, and eating gluten free is the only way I stay healthy.
2. “Just a little” will hurt.
I would much rather be eating soft, pillowy, gluten-filled treats. But this isn’t a cheat-day situation. It’s a medical necessity. Staying healthy is something I do for myself, my friends, and my family so I can enjoy life. Cheating hurts — so I don’t.
3. Celiac disease is a whole-body disease.
Brain fog. Fatigue. Joint pain. Anemia. Anxiety. Osteoporosis. Vitamin deficiencies. But sure, let’s reduce it to “tummy trouble” and make it sound trivial.
A friend once told me about his miserable colonoscopy prep. I said, “That’s my everyday.” He was shocked. Then came compassion — because suddenly he understood this isn’t minor.
4. It’s exhausting.
Every meal is a strategy session. Every label is a research project. Every social event is logistics. All while explaining — again — why I can’t eat that and what happens when I do.
5. I’m more than my disease.
I’ll educate when it makes sense. I’m happy to advocate, encourage, and dispel the dumb rumors that circulate about celiac disease. But I don’t have to turn every dinner party into a celiac symposium.
Celiac disease is part of who I am — not the only thing I am.
