Medical Electives Belize is dedicated to providing internships for international volunteers and current and potential medical students. We offer global health internships, medical elective rotations, and international volunteer opportunities for those seeking a valuable and memorable experience working in the Central American/Caribbean country of Belize. You have the option of splitting your medical electives placement across different hospitals to achieve your goals. Once you apply, we will review your details and respond back to you with an acceptance decision within 7 days. If you are accepted into the program, you will be assigned a program adviser who will help you organize the specific details of your trip. You will also receive an official letter from the Health Institution’s residence Chief of Staff verifying your acceptance to the program.

Our program is based in San Ignacio, the diverse capital of Belize’s Cayo District, located 2 hours from Belize City. The town is made up of mix of creole, Maya and mestizo populations, ensuring a rich cultural exchange between volunteers and locals. Your placement program will include a homestay with a local family in downtown San Ignacio, giving you a unique insight into everyday life in Belize. There will also be ample opportunities to explore the ruins, jungles, beaches, and surrounding areas of Belize.

Staying with Nancy’s family was the perfect way immerse ourselves in the town – she really looked after us and we felt safe and very at home the whole time. The accommodation was clean, comfortable, and well equipped with an ensuite bathroom and kitchenette. Nancy was very helpful and kindly provided us with anything else we needed.

Our experience in the hospital was also very positive. It is a small community hospital but covers maternity, emergency, and outpatient departments so we got a broad range of experience. We saw lots of conditions we aren’t usually exposed to in the UK and learned the similarities and differences between our healthcare systems.
