For the past couple of years, I’ve been calling what we do as RMTs The Massage Therapy Theatre.

Not because massage is fake.
Not because the client is an audience.
And not because the therapist is putting on a performance.

I call it theatre because a great session is more than a collection of techniques.

The theatre begins the moment you introduce yourself.

What’s your energy? What’s the client’s energy? Can you meet them where they are, rather than expecting them to adapt to you? Perhaps you've noticed some overt signs of pain behaviour, and just like that you've already started your differential.

Can you match their pacing, listen for what matters to them, and help them feel deeply heard?

All while you’re gathering a clinical history, establishing a baseline, screening for red flags, considering whether their presentation is specific or nonspecific, and deciding whether further assessment is indicated.

You’re listening for their beliefs, expectations, concerns, motivations, goals, and fears. You’re trying to understand where they are at, and the change they are seeking from this appointment, and somehow, you’re making all of this look like an ordinary conversation.

That’s part of the skill. That's the art
