Hi friends! 👋

I have probably the strangest—and most exciting—request I’ve ever made of you.

Lanny and I have come up with an idea that could take our little tea business to a level we honestly hadn’t considered before. And I think it could be an incredible opportunity for him, too.

The problem? In this economy, I don’t think we can make it happen on our own. We’re looking at grants, youth entrepreneurship funding, women-owned business programs, small-business financing, and potentially business loans to help us get this idea off the ground.

So I’m putting out the bat-signal. 😂

If you are a grant writer, have experience writing successful grant applications, know about funding programs for youth entrepreneurs or women-owned businesses, or just happen to know someone who does—PLEASE reach out to us.

We have a budget set aside to pay a grant writer, because we want to do this properly. We’re not looking for someone to work for free; we’re looking for someone who knows how to navigate this world and can help us figure out what we may actually qualify for.

If you have a lead, a recommendation, a resource, or a person we should talk to, we would be eternally grateful.

Because… I think we might actually be onto something here.

So, friends: help us find the person who can help us make it happen. ❤️🌿

Let’s do this.

📋 A little massage therapy intake-form education… because I’ve noticed a trend.

Recently, I’ve been seeing answers like:
💊 “N/A”
💊 “None that are affected by massage”
…under the question asking clients to list their current medications.

And this tells me there may be a misunderstanding about why massage therapists ask this question in the first place.

When your intake form asks you to list medications, please list the medications you are actually taking. You don’t need to decide whether you think they’re relevant to massage. That’s something your massage therapist can evaluate with you.
Medication use doesn’t automatically mean you can’t receive massage. Not at all. But certain medications can change how we safely approach your session. Depending on the medication and your individual circumstances, we may need to consider things like:

• bruising or bleeding risk
• blood pressure or dizziness
• sedation or alertness
• altered pain perception or sensation
• skin or tissue fragility
• inflammation or healing
• how much pressure may be appropriate
• whether a technique should be modified or avoided
• whether additional medical clearance may be appropriate ⬅️🚨

Sometimes the answer is simply, “Thanks for letting me know,” and your massage proceeds exactly as planned. Other times, that little piece of information changes how I work with you.

That’s why the question isn’t:
“Are you taking any medications that YOU think affect massage?”

It’s:
“Please list any medications you are currently taking.”

You don’t have to know what matters clinically. That’s my job. Your intake form isn’t busywork. It’s one of the tools I use to help make your session as safe, appropriate, and individualized as possible.

And please don’t worry about being judged for what you take. Medication information is health information, not a morality test. I just need accurate information so I can make informed decisions about your care.

✨ When in doubt, disclose it and let your therapist decide whether it’s relevant. Education creates safer massage for everyone.

Six months. That's it.

We're already halfway to benefits rolling over again, and a whole lot of people are still leaving up to a third of their healthcare benefits sitting on the table because they haven't booked their massage yet.

You paid for those benefits. They're part of your compensation package. If you don't use them, they don't magically turn into cash—they just disappear when your plan resets.

If you've been saying, "I'll book next month," consider this your friendly kick in the pants. 😄

Whether you're dealing with chronic pain, headaches, stress, old injuries, or you just need an hour where nobody expects anything from you, now's a good time to get it on the calendar.

I direct bill most major insurance providers, so it's one less thing for you to worry about.

You'll find me at **Leela Eco Spa in Bridgeland**, and I'd love to help you get the most out of the benefits you're already paying for.

Field Notes from the Hedgerow 07/14/2026

The dome is calling and the season is peaking — but before we disappear into the good work of July, come find us first. 🌿

We'll be at the Soulway's Dog Rescue Market on Siksika, July 18th, 12–8pm, showing up in support of a local dog and animal rescue. More heart. More fur. More reason to be there on a Saturday afternoon.

We're bringing summer teas, good conversation, and our feral beasty of adorableness (rescue dog, obviously — because feral rez dogs need love too and they can be the most amazing family pets).

And because it's July and the garden is absolutely losing its mind right now — we've written a full field guide to the edible weeds and flowers growing in your yard, plus our garlic-forward, vampire-deterring dressing and the bowl method that keeps the pretty things pretty. 🧄🌸

Quick PSA: We’re officially halfway through the year! 🗓️ Did you remember that your massage benefits rolled over 6 months ago? Don't leave your coverage unclaimed or let it all wait until December. Your table—and your benefits—are waiting.

This just in: more government over reach affecting your access to herbal preparations and an alternative to pharmaceutical care. They are literally taking away your rights to choose how you receive care.

Please even if your just an end user and like herbal teas like the ones we make and sell, even if herbs just help yur digestion occasionally: please help us protect your right to choice: read this and send the email.

Its long but explains everything. Please help.

Dear AHA Community,

Something important is happening at the federal level right now — and the deadline to make your voice heard is July 12, 2026. That's soon. Please read this.

Health Canada's Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD) has released two proposed policy documents that will directly shape how herbal practitioners in Canada are permitted to prepare and dispense remedies. The Alberta Herbalists Association (AHA) and the Canadian Council of Herbalist Associations (CCHA), our national umbrella body, have reviewed these proposals carefully — and we have serious concerns.

Here is what is being proposed, and why it matters.

Your herbalist's single-herb preparations may lose their protected status.

When your herbalist fills a bottle with a high-quality, practitioner-grade Echinacea extract — calibrated to your specific dose, drawn from wildcrafted or carefully cultivated plant material, at a potency you will not find on any health food store shelf — that is a clinical act performed within your care relationship. Under the proposed policy changes, Health Canada is suggesting this may not qualify as compounding. We strongly disagree, and we have said so formally. The 1:2 or 1:3 tincture your herbalist makes for you is not the same as the 1:10 product on a retail shelf. They are not interchangeable, and policy must not treat them as though they are.

Health Canada is proposing that practitioners should only compound when no comparable commercial product is available.

This would imply that before preparing a remedy tailored specifically to you, your herbalist should first check whether something similar exists in a store. We want to be unequivocal: herbal practitioners are clinicians. The foundation of our practice is individualized care. A prepackaged product cannot replicate a formula or preparation made for your body, your presentation, and your needs. We are firmly opposed to any language that subordinates clinical judgment to commercial product availability.

Routine compounding preparations are being reclassified as mere "directions of use."

Reconstituting a powder with a specific liquid at a specific ratio — a routine clinical preparation — is being characterized by the proposed policy as a minor modification that does not constitute compounding. We disagree. The clinical decisions embedded in that preparation are exactly what compounding is.

New import documentation requirements would require practitioners to justify their clinical choices to federal regulators.

Herbal practitioners who import raw materials for use in their dispensaries have always done so without requiring a site license — and the proposed policy maintains that exemption. However, it introduces new requirements asking practitioners to declare intended use and claims associated with imported materials. Health Canada already maintains official monographs for the herbs we use. Requiring practitioners to pre-justify their clinical use of well-documented substances is an overreach into practice that falls, by Health Canada's own acknowledgment, outside federal jurisdiction.

What the AHA and CCHA have done.

We have not been silent. The CCHA, with the support of their member associations including the AHA, has submitted a formal response letter to the NNHPD outlining our concerns and requesting specific changes to both policy documents. We have submitted an addendum strengthening our position on the four issues above. We have requested a direct meeting with the Director General of the NNHPD before these policies are finalized.

We are asking for accurate recognition of what herbal compounding practice actually is — and we are asking for your help to make that message louder.

What we are asking you to do — before July 12.

Whether you are an herbalist, a student, a patient, or someone who simply values access to high-quality individualized herbal care: your email to Health Canada counts.

📩 Email: [email protected]
📅 Deadline: July 12, 2026

You do not need to write a lengthy letter. A few sincere sentences from someone who has experienced the difference that practitioner-crafted herbal medicine makes is exactly the kind of public feedback that matters in a consultation process like this one. Here is a simple template if it helps:

Subject: Public Feedback — NHP Compounding Policy and Raw Material Policy

Dear NNHPD,

I am writing to express my support for the right of herbal practitioners to continue compounding individualized remedies for their patients, including the preparation and dispensing of single-herb extracts, reconstituted preparations, and formulas made according to clinical judgment rather than commercial product availability.

Individualized herbal care has [made a meaningful difference in my health / been an important part of my practice / been central to my training as a herbalist — choose what applies]. I ask that Health Canada's final policies reflect the clinical reality of herbal compounding practice and protect practitioners' ability to serve their patients.

Sincerely,
[Your name and city]

Please send your email before July 12. Then share this message with anyone in your life who cares about access to real, practitioner-quality herbal medicine.

We will keep you informed as this process moves forward.

In solidarity,

Heather Fairfield, RH(AHA)
President, Alberta Herbalists Association

The Alberta Herbalists Association is a provincial member association of the Canadian Council of Herbalist Associations (CCHA). We represent registered clinical herbalists, herbal educators, and students of herbal medicine across Alberta.
