One of the biggest reasons I started learning formulation was because I didn’t want to choose between the kind of ingredients I wanted to use and products that actually performed.

Natural haircare doesn’t have to mean watery shampoo, conditioner with no slip, or hair that never quite feels salon-level.

But good ingredients alone aren’t enough.

The surfactant system matters. Conditioning ingredients matter. Percentages matter. pH matters. Preservation matters. And understanding how all of those pieces work together is where formulation comes in.

That’s exactly what I’m teaching in my beginner Non-Chemist’s Guide to Formulation.

You’ll start with a shampoo and conditioner formula, learn what the ingredients are actually doing, and then learn how to begin customizing them instead of relying on random DIY recipes forever.

I don’t believe helping someone else succeed takes anything away from me.

That’s really the whole point behind this.

I’ve had people ask whether teaching formulation means I’m basically creating my own competition, and I just don’t see business that way.

I’m not giving away the exact proprietary formulas I use for Less & Lavish. Im going to be teaching the foundations.

How shampoo and conditioner formulas are built.
What different ingredients are doing.
How percentages, pH, preservation, surfactants, oils and thickeners all work together.

And then I want people to take that knowledge and do something of their own with it.

Maybe that means making products for themselves. Or maybe for their family. And maybe even one day they build a business.

Good. I really hope they do well.

Because someone else having a great idea, building a beautiful brand, or becoming successful does not make my own opportunities smaller.

There is room for different voices, different styles, different products, different communities and different ways of doing things.

I would rather teach people enough to develop their own creative voice than gatekeep information because I’m afraid of what they might do with it.

The universe is not on a budget. šŸ¤

Formula fail… but also proof that ā€œworksā€ depends on the hair you’re formulating for. šŸ˜‚

I’ve been working on a natural hair clay/wax for Jake for a while now, and his hair is honestly one of the hardest test subjects.

It’s thick, dense, curly, and he wants a lot of grip and hold without that greasy, waxy finish.

My first versions had incredible hold, but they were fully oil-based and hardened so much that he had to basically melt the product between his hands before he could use it.

So I moved toward a softer, more water-based formula.

Way easier to apply, but way less hold.

And that kicked off a whole new round of adjusting the balance between wax, clay, oils and butters.

The funny part? Some of these newer versions work beautifully on my boys because their hair is much finer.

So the formula isn’t necessarily ā€œbadā€ it just isn’t strong enough yet for Jake’s hair.

That’s one of the things I love about formulation.

You can make something that looks perfect in the jar, feels amazing between your fingers, and still realize the real-world performance isn’t quite there yet.

Natural is not the finish line.

It still has to perform.

Back to the formula board we go. šŸ˜‚

Watching women like Jessica Carter | motherhood + personal growth and Jessi Jean have these incredible digital launches is genuinely so inspiring.

It also makes it very easy to look at your own first launch and think, ā€œWell… mine is tiny.ā€ šŸ˜‚

But I’m trying really hard not to do that.

This is my first digital product, it came from people in my own community asking me to teach something I already love doing, and 110 people have already raised their hand and said they want to learn from me.

That is something I’m incredibly grateful for.

I can admire what other women have built, be inspired by how massive their launches have become, and still be proud of where I’m starting.

Everybody’s ā€œhugeā€ started somewhere.

And right now, I’m just really excited to see what happens with mine. 🄰

ā€œMy hair is fine, but I have a lot of it.ā€ Anyone else? šŸ˜‚

Fine hair describes the thickness of each strand. Density describes how many strands you have on your head.

So you can have fine strands with high density, coarse strands with low density, or any combination in between. Add waves, curls, and frizz, and appearances can get a little confusing!

What’s your combination? Fine, medium, or coarse strands, and do you have a little hair or a whole lot? šŸ‘‡šŸ¤

There is a huge difference between finding a homemade shampoo recipe online and actually understanding how that formula is built.

A recipe can tell you what to mix.

Formulation teaches you why each ingredient is there, what job it is doing, and what happens when you change it.

That’s why this guide doesn’t stop at one basic natural shampoo and conditioner formula.

You’ll start there, because beginners need something clear and simple to follow.

But then we’ll break down the ingredients, percentages, pH, preservation, troubleshooting, and different ways you can customize things like your oils, hydrosols, surfactants, thickeners, and other variations.

The goal is not to memorize my formula.

The goal is to understand enough to start making informed choices and eventually create something that feels like your own.

If you’ve been searching for a beginner-friendly way to learn DIY haircare, homemade shampoo, natural conditioner, clean beauty formulation, or how to make your own non-toxic hair products at home, comment GUIDE and I’ll send you the waitlist link.
