Anyone getting the hint with all of my snack posts that protein is king? Doesn’t matter if you’re trying lose fat, build muscle, or live a healthy lifestyle, protein is such an important macronutrient!
I inherited this snack idea from a former client. Quick and easy, and you can add a side of crackers or a bagel to increase the carbs, if you want.
Simply lay out deli turkey (chicken or beef or ham works, too!). Place a single pickle in the middle, and top with sundried tomatoes. Roll it up, and pop it in your mouth. A little bit of shredded cheese is delicious in these, too!

Having trouble increasing your protein intake?
Pop into my feed to find a couple of protein cheat sheets - animal and plant based. Also, a post on how to get 30g of protein at each meal. Links below.
But also, remember: baby steps!
It might be tough for your body to adjust from eating 10g of protein at each meal right up to 30g. It’s okay to start with increasing each meal by 5g of protein. Do that for a week or two, and then add another 5g of protein.
Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.
Keep it super simple and sustainable.

It’s totally normal!
Being nervous is often thought of as a bad emotion. But, feeling nervous can be utilized to bolster our performance, & tap into things that hold us back from living our best life. So, don’t shame yourself for being nervous - learn from it.
Use that nervous energy to propel you forward into a great training session. Lean into the discomfort. Get curious - what happened previously that resulted in you feeling this way? What is un-true about those things? What part did you play in those scenarios? Do you have some limiting beliefs that are holding you back? How can you change those limiting beliefs? This is an opportunity for you to create new thought patterns, as well as build resilience, determination, courage, & self-efficacy.
While you play a large role in getting the most out of your session, your coach also plays an important role in helping you get the most out of your session. It’s your coach’s job to:
👉🏼 Orient you to the facility you’ll be training in
👉🏼 Give you a rundown of what your session will look like
👉🏼 Demonstrate all of the movements in your session, while pointing out the fine details of the movements so you get the most from them
👉🏼 Set you up for success
👉🏼 Challenge you, but not tip you over the edge
👉🏼 Provide programming that best suits YOU
👉🏼 Cheer you on
👉🏼 Congratulate you on things you did well, & support you in refining movements that need refining
👉🏼 High five you at the end of every session, & acknowledge your good work for the day
👉🏼 Smile, be friendly & welcoming, & make you feel like the wonderful human you are
Join me Triform Athletics and walk out of the gym each day more YOU than you were when you walked in.

Do you feel bummed 😕 when a workout calls for Pistol Squats, because they aren’t in your wheelhouse (yet!)? 😃
Never fear! There are lots of great single leg squat variations you can use to get the same intention of the workout, AND work your way up to full on Pistol Squats🔫
👉🏼 Start on a box or a bench. Lift one leg in front, sit down on the box, and then stand. Increase or reduce the height of the box or bench to accommodate your current needs or make things more challenging.
👉🏼 Another box or bench variation involves standing on the box, and only doing the negative (downward) portion of the squat, using your free leg to help you stand up on top of the box again. Be sure to allow your torso to lean over your working leg to balance out your centre of mass.
👉🏼 Try the Kickstand Squat variation, too, with one foot hooked behind the standing leg, and your toe supporting the squat and stand motion. When you feel confident with this, hook your foot higher up your calf so you don’t have the support of the foot on the floor. In these variations, you can use support of an upright or a dowel to give you a hand, too.
👉🏼 Rings or a TRX system are also great for providing additional support on both the squat and stand motion.
👉🏼 Finally, before graduating to full on, unsupported single leg squats, use an upright or dowel to give you support as you send one leg out in front and squat down and up on your standing leg.
Enjoy the process of incorporating this challenging movement into your repertoire of fun gym things!

Despite the importance of protein intake (helps with fat loss & muscle gain, supports body functions which underpins longevity), protein seems to be the toughest macro for many folks to hit.
Before diving into the attached cheat sheet, I invite you to ask yourself WHY you have such troubles? ⤵️
Is it because…
👉🏼you don’t enjoy eating proteins?
👉🏼you find proteins are boring (I’ll agree that carbs & fats are more fun!!)?
👉🏼you don’t have enough protein on hand at the ready each day?
👉🏼you aren’t certain that protein is actually as beneficial for you as the research says?
👉🏼you don’t see the benefits of eating more protein?
👉🏼you tend toward a more plant based lifestyle for philosophical reasons?
👉🏼you’re not in the habit of eating protein at each meal, & therefore, aren’t prioritizing it when you make your meals and snacks?
If it’s a yes to any or all of the above questions, those are all valid reasons (ahem, excuses) for not being able to hit your targets. But, there are also strategies, habits, & behaviors we can build around each one of these that will help you reach your protein target. One of which is using the attached cheat sheet for selecting a protein at each meal.
The other is knowing that it’s possible to hit your daily protein target because:
- You’re successful at other things, so you can be successful at this, too;
- Others can reach their protein targets, so data tells us that it’s possible 😉

If you’re in a fat loss phase, you can expect to feel a bit hungry. This is one sign that you’re in a caloric deficit, and something you need to learn to manage while in this temporary phase.
BUT, that does NOT mean you need to feel tortured by hunger in order to lose fat.
You want to achieve fat loss while eating as many calories as possible. While this strategy may mean it takes longer for fat loss to occur, it also means that your fat loss is more likely to be sustained, AND that you’re able to have more flexibility around the foods you include in your food plan.
I can help make this happen for you! Link in profile to get started.

The dumbbell & kettlebell clean is another great way to get some weighted movement in that is different from the usual. This version of the clean can be less challenging than the barbell version. And, if you have a shoulder or wrist injury, using DB or KB often helps you avoid aggravating the injury, while still being able to move weight from the ground to shoulder, as it puts your wrist & shoulder in a different position than the barbell version.
Starting with one head of the dumbbell on the ground, drop the hips into a squat position as you take hold of the weight. Just as you would with a barbell clean, drive with the hips, & lead with the shoulder & elbow (shrug & high-pull), keeping the weight close to your body as you pull it to your shoulder. Make sure you don’t turn this into a dumbbell curl.
When using a KB for the clean, be sure to start the movement with your thumb pointing behind you (aka “thumb to bum”). As you pull & lead with the elbow, this helps the KB to roll around your hand & wrist to rest on your shoulder, preventing the KB from slamming down on your shoulder. This takes practice - don’t give up!
For alternating DB cleans, you have the option of switching on the floor, or switching as the weight drops in front of you.
Doing DB or KB cleans from the hang position is also an option. This version requires more of a hinge position than a squat position, with the same hip drive as you pull the weight to your shoulder.

You’ve heard it time and time again: “Prioritize protein!” You’ve seen the Protein Cheat Sheets (peep my feed for a handy-dandy one!), but you’re looking for alternate sources, besides eggs, meat, and fish 🥩
The trouble is, there are a lot of foods out there that you *think* are protein sources, but actually get the majority of their calories from something else 😳 Thus today’s cheat sheet.
While some of these foods contain higher levels of protein than other foods in the same category, that doesn’t mean they are top notch protein sources 😕 It is possible to combine some of these foods to create a solid intake of protein, though.
🌱 The only non-animal product sources of protein that get the majority of their calories from protein are tofu, soybeans, tempeh, and seitan.

Another thought for you on why your progress might be stalling as you build your wellness portfolio:
You don’t get enough quality sleep.
Sleep is when our bodies rest and regenerate - without this, body processes don’t work correctly, including effective digestion and proper absorption of nutrients. And, when we are tired, we have a lot of difficulty making good choices about what we eat 🤔
