Summary of Evidence for Red Light Therapy in Skin Conditions- you asked!!

- Mechanism: Red light (620–700 nm) and near-infrared light modulate mitochondrial activity, increase ATP production, and activate signaling pathways that promote cellular proliferation, migration, and differentiation.

- Safety: Red light therapy is generally safe and well-tolerated, with erythema being the most common, self-limited adverse effect. No DNA damage has been reported.

- Skin Rejuvenation: Clinical and experimental studies show red light increases collagen synthesis and reduces matrix metalloproteinases, leading to improved skin texture and photorejuvenation.

- Wound Healing: Red light therapy accelerates wound healing and tissue repair, with evidence supporting its use for ulcers and acute wounds.

- Acne Vulgaris: Red light, often combined with blue light, is effective in reducing acne lesions and inflammation, with meta-analyses showing statistically significant improvement.

- Androgenic Alopecia: Consensus guidelines support red light therapy as a safe and effective adjunct for hair growth in androgenic alopecia.

- Psoriasis and Inflammatory Dermatoses: Evidence is promising but limited; small studies suggest benefit, but protocols and outcomes are heterogeneous.

- Pigmentary Disorders: Some evidence supports use in vitiligo and melasma, but results are variable and further research is needed.

- Methodological Limitations: Studies vary widely in dosing, wavelength, and outcome measures; many are small, lack blinding, and are industry-sponsored, limiting generalizability.

- Clinical Consensus: Expert panels and systematic reviews recommend red light therapy for select indications, but emphasize the need for standardized protocols and further high-quality research.

In summary, red light therapy is a safe, non-invasive option with moderate evidence for skin rejuvenation, wound healing, acne, and hair loss, but further research is needed for inflammatory and pigmentary conditions.

When should you be worried about a skin lesion?
A: Asymmetry – One half of the lesion does not match the other half in shape or color.

- B: Border irregularity – The edges are ragged, notched, blurred, or poorly defined.

- C: Color variation – The lesion displays multiple colors or uneven pigmentation (e.g., shades of tan, brown, black, red, white, or blue).

- D: Diameter – The lesion is greater than 6 mm in diameter (about the size of a pencil eraser), though melanomas can be smaller.

- E: Evolution – The lesion is changing in size, shape, color, or symptoms (such as bleeding or itching) over time.

This approach is widely endorsed by the American Cancer Society and is foundational in both clinical and patient education for early melanoma detection.
