Lymphedema after breast cancer treatment doesn’t always start with obvious swelling. In fact, some of the earliest signs can be subtle, and recognizing them early can make a difference.
Here are 5 things to watch for:
1. A feeling of heaviness or fullness: Your arm, hand, breast, or chest may feel heavy, tight, or “full,” even if you can’t see much swelling yet.
2. Rings, watches, or clothing feel tighter: You may notice your jewellery, bra, or sleeves fitting differently on one side.
3. Skin feels tight or different: The skin may feel stretched, firm, or less flexible than usual.
4. Aching, discomfort, or a “strange” sensation: Some people notice mild aching, tingling, pressure, or a feeling that something just doesn't feel quite right.
5. Changes in movement: You may notice your arm or shoulder doesn't move as freely, or certain movements feel tighter than they used to.
These symptoms don't automatically mean you have lymphedema. There can be many reasons for changes after breast cancer treatment. But if you notice new or persistent changes on one side, it's worth having them assessed by a clinician familiar with cancer-related lymphedema.
Early assessment can help establish a baseline, identify changes over time, and determine whether treatment or monitoring is appropriate.
