When costs go up whether it’s minimum wage, colour, or rent
What’s the first thing salon owners do?
They check the menu of the salon down the street.
Stop doing that.
The salon down the road might own their building outright. They might have signed a lease a decade ago at half your square-foot rate, run zero support staff, or be on the verge of going broke because they guessed their pricing, too. You cannot price your chairs on someone else’s overhead.
Here’s the baseline formula to price with real intention:
Total up your monthly fixed overhead—rent, utilities, software, insurance, and baseline support wages.
Divide that by the total hours your salon is open each month.
Divide that number by your active working chairs.
That gives you your exact cost per chair-hour—or break it down to the chair-minute. If a chair costs 60 cents a minute just to keep the doors unlocked and the lights on, a 45-minute service eats nearly $30 in fixed overhead before your stylist even touches a pair of shears.
From there, add your direct product costs off the top, pay your stylist, and make sure there is a built-in salon margin left over to keep the business healthy, profitable, and growing.
Stop guessing, and stop copying your neighbour. Price your salon for your balance sheet, not their menu.
