WHEN DATA CENTERS FAIL, WHO PAYS THE PRICE?

A reported power failure at Vantage Data Centers’ VA2 campus in Sterling, Virginia, allegedly triggered a 24-hour ordeal of loud generator noise and diesel exhaust for nearby residents.

One resident, Greg Pirio, reportedly experienced burning lungs and was forced to leave his home because of the fumes.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the impact of data center backup generators on surrounding communities, particularly during periods of poor air quality.

According to the account, Virginia’s Department of Environmental Quality said existing regulations limited its ability to stop emergency backup generators from operating.

As data centers expand to meet growing demand for AI and cloud computing, an urgent question remains:

Should technological progress come at the expense of the health, safety, and peace of mind of the people living next door?

Communities deserve clean air, reasonable noise levels, transparency, and meaningful protections—not just promises of progress.
