Today my mom knew I needed a hug… a reminder of what life is really all about… so she sent me a surprise visit from Francine, who has been coming to the salon since 1987. She was my mom’s client first, then mine, and even after moving to Ottawa she still traveled here every month for her color until COVID.
Today was a hard day. I missed my mom so much and found myself questioning a lot. People need to know that this is never just a hair business for me. It is a people business. I am here to make people feel heard, to help them feel good about themselves, and to remind them they are never alone. Francine even mentioned how we were a part of all the good and bad in her life—that we were always there to listen and guide her.
Yes, I am strong, but I am also full of feelings, and that is what makes me, me. When Francine surprised me today, she looked at me and said, “I miss you and your mother, and it saddens me to know I will never have that bond with anybody else.”
In that moment, I remembered why I wake up every morning. The beautiful souls I’ve met have shaped who I am, and it feels so good to be loved. Thank you to everyone who keeps my mom’s memory alive. Today I know my mom knew I needed a hug and sent Francine from Ottawa to remind me she is right here beside me. My guardian angel, whom I miss so much.
