I realized that my greatest lessons had very little to do with makeup itself.
Over the years, I learned about blending, techniques, skin concerns, products, and how to bring out the best in every face. But there was something much deeper I began to notice.
A woman's relationship with herself can influence how she sees the reflection in the mirror.
I've had the privilege of working with so many beautiful women, each with her own unique features and personality.
And I've noticed something fascinating.
Women who feel comfortable in their own skin often seem to enjoy the makeup experience differently. They look in the mirror and appreciate what they see. They don't necessarily need perfection to feel beautiful. They can embrace the little details without letting them overshadow the whole picture.
Then there have been other experiences. Moments when, no matter how carefully I applied the makeup, how closely I listened, or how many adjustments I made, something still didn't feel right.
At first, I questioned myself.
Could I have understood her better? Was there something I missed? What more could I have done?
Until I began to understand something important.
Sometimes, what we struggle to see in the mirror has very little to do with what is actually reflected in it.
Sometimes, the missing piece isn't another touch of blush, a different eyeshadow, or a more precise technique.
Sometimes, it's the way we see ourselves.
When we struggle to appreciate ourselves, even the most beautiful reflection may not feel beautiful enough.
And when we cultivate self-love, self-acceptance, and appreciation, we can begin to see beauty differently. Not because our features have changed, but because our perspective has.
Of course, makeup artistry matters. Listening matters. Skill matters. And sometimes, a makeup look simply needs improvement.
I've learned that makeup can enhance our appearance, but it cannot always change the way we feel about ourselves.
And perhaps one of the most beautiful things we can do for ourselves is to stop expecting our reflection to give us the validation that only self-acceptance can build within us.🩷
