If you can recall a parent berating another I'm sure it's left a bad memory and maybe even lingering resentment.
👉When someone is purposefully embarrassed it causes disgust in us, no matter the culture or gender. When it's our own parent and we don't feel capable of defending them it's traumatizing. Some kids do step in and what happens next often leaves a scar.
♾️It can also begin a cycle unconsciously.
A child that witnesses verbal abuse can:
☝️Turn to verbal abuse as well when they don't feel listened to or like they have control over a situation. Things that provoke anxiety or a repetition of that same childhood memory can be reacted to strongly.
✌️Become the verbally abused since they are stuck in freeze modes of coping with explosive conversations. They remember all too well that in order to regain a feeling of safety they shouldn't defend themselves.
Instead what we should be promoting between parents is healthier "in the moment" skills that help them avoid big blow ups that their children witness. When we look for solutions instead of cast blame and shame we can find a better way together.
Verbal abuse is damaging. When we witness it in our parents it's traumatic. It creates "walking on eggshell" relationships and dramatic ways of coping with problems, which is all then passed on. Having more care for each person in difficult moments (even the tiny ears that aren't involved) means that long term relationships matter. Your spouse will notice and so will your kids.
