Here is the step-by-step breakdown of that color shift:
❤️Dark red start: In its natural state, the glycerite sits at a lower, acidic pH where the pigment molecules stay tightly protonated, reflecting deep crimson light.
💜The purple shift: Blending it into a surfactant solution bumps up the pH, making the environment more alkaline. The pigment molecules lose hydrogen ions, altering how they absorb light and turning the blend a dramatic moody purple.
🩷Back to vibrant red: Stirring in Geogard (an acidic preservative blend) drops the pH back down into the ideal skin-safe zone (~4.5–5.5). The flood of hydrogen ions instantly resets the pigment’s chemical structure, snapping it back to a bright, fiery red.
