Many clinics will tell you their diode laser is “safe for dark skin.” But there’s more to the story.

A diode laser can be used on some darker skin tones. However, that doesn’t mean every diode is the best or safest choice for every client with dark skin.

Here’s why:

Diode lasers commonly use a wavelength around 800–810 nm. This wavelength is still attracted to melanin. On darker skin, there is more melanin in the skin competing with the hair for the laser energy. That can increase the risk of unwanted side effects, such as burns or pigmentation changes, especially when treatments are not performed correctly.

Nd:Yag uses a longer wavelength of 1064 nm. It is less absorbed by melanin in the skin and penetrates deeper to target the hair follicle. This is why Nd is generally considered the preferred wavelength for the darkest skin tones.

So when someone says, “Our diode is safe for dark skin,” my question would be:

Which skin tone? Which diode wavelength? And what settings are being used?

“Safe for dark skin” should never be a blanket statement.

The truth is, not all lasers are created equal, and not every laser is the right choice for every skin tone.

At Spa Olivia, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro, which allows us to choose between Alexandrite and Nd wavelengths based on your individual skin tone, hair type and treatment needs.

The goal isn't just to remove hair. It's to do it as safely and effectively as possible.

Why do people choose laser hair removal?

For many, it isn’t because they simply hate shaving.

It’s because of what shaving does to their skin.

Ingrown hairs. Razor bumps. Redness. Irritation. Itching. 5 o'clock shadow. And that uncomfortable feeling of having to shave again and again.
