Day 4 of 30 Days of Inuit Culture 💙
Happy Indigenous History Month! 📚
I Was Named After My Grandmother, Newkinga ❤️
In Inuit culture, a name is much more than something written on paper.
I was named after my grandmother, Newkinga.
For Inuit, naming a child after someone is a way of carrying that person forward. Their memory, their presence, and the connection to them continue through the child who receives their name.
That is why Inuit children may sometimes be called “grandmother,” “grandfather,” or other family terms that can seem unusual to outsiders. The name creates a relationship that is honoured and respected.
Our names connect generations.
They carry stories.
They carry love.
They carry belonging.
For many Inuit families, names help keep loved ones close, even after they are gone.
Colonization tried to replace our names with numbers and systems that did not reflect who we were. Yet Inuit naming traditions remain an important part of our culture and identity.
When I say I am named after my grandmother, Newkinga, I am acknowledging that connection. Her name is part of my story, and I carry it with pride.
Our names are not random.
They are gifts.
They are connections.
They are carried.

Holay lol as my aunt would say big boy kadla 😆
A polar bear nicknamed “Fat Albert” has gone viral in Alaska because of his unusually large, rounded frame near Kaktovik on the Beaufort Sea coast. Reports have described the bear at roughly 1,500 pounds, far above the typical weight often cited for many adult male polar bears, though such estimates are based on observation rather than an official public weigh-in. citeturn0search2turn0search20
The bear’s size is commonly linked to feeding opportunities around Kaktovik, where remains from Iñupiat subsistence whale harvests are placed away from town and can attract polar bears. Researchers and reporting on the area have long documented bears gathering near these whale bone piles to eat high-fat remains, especially when sea-ice hunting conditions are limited. citeturn0search10turn0search11turn0search20
Despite the nickname, Fat Albert is not part of Alaska’s annual Fat Bear Week. That event is run by Katmai National Park and celebrates brown bears that bulk up on salmon before winter, not polar bears from Arctic communities like Kaktovik. Polar bears also do not hibernate in the same way Katmai’s brown bears do, making the comparison misleading even if the nickname sounds like a natural fit. citeturn0search0turn0search1turn0search8
