I’m turning 50 soon, and lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want this next chapter of my life in my work to look like.
After more than 20 years in the beauty industry in a variety of roles, I know the work I feel more passionate about is helping women navigate their changing beauty needs.
Changing skin. Changing makeup. Menopause. Confidence. Style. And all the things nobody really prepares us for along the way.
So I’m very excited to finally share my new home:
MARIAVELVE.ca is officially live 🎉!
It’s where you’ll find my make up services 💄 , consultations, the Menopause Beauty Transformation System, blog, and all ways to work together.
This next chapter is going to be a little more personal, little more unfiltered, and I’m really looking forward to sharing it with you 💖

If the skincare routine you’ve used for years suddenly doesn’t seem to be working anymore, you may not need more products.
As our skin changes, sometimes our approach needs to change too ✨. And it might not mean that you have to rush out and get the next thing.
These are a few things I focus on now at almost 50.
Has your skincare routine changed in your 40s?

I’m Maria. — a professional makeup artist, beauty expert, educator, content creator, and woman about to turn 50.
I’ve spent more than 20 years working the beauty industry, but I’ve also experienced firsthand what happens with the skin care and makeup routines you rely on for years suddenly don’t work quite the same way anymore.
These days, I’m much less interested in chasing younger-looking skin or following every new beauty trend. I’m interested in understanding the skin I have now, choosing products, more thoroughly, simplifying where I can, I’m still having fun with beauty.
That’s what you’ll find here: practical, skincare and makeup for changing skin, on this product, recommend recommendations, hair and style, conversation conversations about beauty and ageing - and a little life along the way.
Because I don’t believe beauty has an expiration date. And I definitely don’t think turning 40, 50 or beyond means we have to stop experimenting, evolving or enjoying it.
if you knew here, I’m so glad you found me. And if you’ve been here for a while, thank you for coming along as the space continues to evolve with me 🤍.
Tell me something about you:
• where are you joining me from?
• what would you love to see more of here?
• what are you currently struggling with when it comes to skin care and makeup?

I’m not giving up heels just because I’m approaching 50. But uncomfortable ones?
Oh yes, those I’m quite happy to leave behind 😅.
I have bunions, so I’ve become much more particular about what I put on my feet especially if I’m going to be standing or working for any length of time.
These chocolate brown booties from Cosy Island have a flexible, stretchy knit upper, built-in arch support, and a block heel, so I can still get the polished look I love while keeping comfort in mind.
And can we talk about the chocolate brown 🤎? Such a beautiful fall neutral 🍂 and an easy way to change things up if you automatically reach for black boots every year.
One thing I’m learning about style as I get older: comfort and style don’t have to be opposites.

Where you place your concealer matter just as much as how much you use 👀!
One of the biggest changes I’ve made to my make up after 45 is that I no longer automatically cover my entire eye with concealer.
I’ve also seen the ridiculous triangle exaggeration on social media and wanted to give you something more realistic.
Instead, I look at where the darkness and shadows actually are, concentrate the product there, and blend the edges into the surrounding skin.
If like me, you have both puffiness and depth to deal with. This is extremely important! You do not want to highlight and exaggerate the puffiness! 🫣
I still get the brightness and coverage I want just with less product sitting on my skin ✨
REMEMBER you can always apply more if you need it.
Have you changed the way you use concealer as you’ve gotten older?

The older I get, the more expansive my definition of beauty becomes 🤍.
I still love skincare.
I still have make up.
I love beautiful products, and the little rituals that come with them ✨.
But I also think beauty is found in the things that bring us back to ourselves.
Time outside in a place that you love 🌲.
A meal that nourishes you.
Spending time with people you love.
A quiet bath 🛁.
Rest.
Space to think or not think at all - this is a challenging one for me.
Maybe taking care of our glow isn’t always about adding another product to our routine.
Sometimes it’s about taking care of the woman underneath it all 💖.
What’s something that makes you feel more like yourself again?

My curly hair has definitely become drier as I’ve gotten older, so my styling routine is all about moisture, definition, and keeping things simple.
I’ve picked up a couple of new things to try because they had great reviews 🤩!
1️⃣ Pre- Wash Care - .global Rosemary Scalp Spray
2️⃣ Hydration for Curls - Dream Coat for Curly Hair
3️⃣ Styling Cream - Honey Milk 5-in-1 Styling Cream 🍯
4️⃣ Curl Styling Gel - Curl Defining Soufflé
5️⃣ Diffuser -
I’m always experimenting with what works best for my curls as they change to fully silver 🩶.

Sometimes the things we need to hear are the simplest 🤍.
As women, we’re so used to taking care of everyone else, being productive, keeping going, and sometimes feeling as though rest are taking care of ourselves needs to be justified.
And somewhere along the way, we’re also handed a lot of messages about what beauty is supposed to look like as we get older.
I’m learning to question some of those messages 🕊️.
✨Rest doesn’t need to be earned.
✨Self-care doesn’t need to be justified.
✨And beauty certainly doesn’t have an expiration date.
Maybe one of these is the reminder you needed today ✨.
Which one did you need to hear?
More concealer doesn’t always mean more coverage!
Especially as the skin around our eyes changes, piling on more product can sometimes make concealer more noticeable 🫣.
My approach now?
Start with less.
Blend.
Take a look 👀.
Then add a little more only where you actually need it.
It’s one of those small makeup changes that can make a big difference in how your makeup sits on your skin.
And no, I’m not saying women over 40 can’t wear full coverage concealer 😉. I’m saying we don’t necessarily need as much of it as we think (or as much as young individuals show us on here).
