BlushPretty : Beauty Bar

One of our favourite styles to beat the heat this past summer.

You would have most likely seen variations of this style throughout wedding season and there’s a reason why - it signals classic, timeless, and modern all at once. It’s elegant, but fun.

I love it when there is a controlled texture and volume throughout, and chunkier face framing pieces at the front.

There is more to makeup than just applying makeup : it’s art but there’s also a theory and a science behind it.

Mixing, matching, and adjusting colours and formulas takes experience, practice, and patience … and then a lot more practice.

And that’s why you hire a makeup artist …

Friends! This is a hard one for me.

I am no stranger to a 24-hour story rant that will disappear, but doing a whole photo shoot for the biz and being in front of the camera for a series of still photos is definitely a fear.

But, we’re going on year 23 year of business, my Jordan year if you will.

So you would think, after all this time that I would learn to be comfortable with myself on film. I’m that person in bridal albums across , touching up brides lipsticks and powdering their faces in the early hours of their wedding day. I most likely was dressed like the way you see in that above photo, with the next to bare face, but with various differing hairstyles over the two decades that have passed.

I really should be comfortable in front of the camera!

But I’m not …

I pushed myself to do this photoshoot with my photographer, Monique, and I’m 100% happy with how it all turned out. But just like a wedding, or your own photoshoot that you’re preparing for, I questioned myself, my ideas, and my outfit choices. And you know what, I questioned my makeup and hair as well!

I compared myself to a lot of other profiles, Pinterest photos, and so on, and thought “I can’t freaking do this”.

But then I said, “screw it, just be everyday me!” And that worked …

All that to say, is while myself and the BlushPretty team can yield a curling wand and a makeup brush like it’s no one’s business, we too are just as nervous and fearful of the same things as you. We know that being the centre of attention on your can be overwhelming. We know that taking headshots for your company website is an added stress you don’t need. And we know that presenting your true self for your brand photoshoot is a mix of emotions in trying to find comfort in your personal style.

We aren’t glamzons. We aren’t supermodels. We aren’t any different than you!

As you can tell by the photo above, the and across from you lives in the same 24 hours of emotion, anxiety, and general chaos as you do. Myself, and the team, REALLY DO GET YOU!

We just happen to be a little bit more experienced at doing makeup and hair!

As a woman, you can be many things …

Remember the days past of when you just snapped a picture and uploaded it to the ‘gram because you thought it - the moment, the look, the vibe - was great. You’d slap a filter on it, maybe, and then call it a day. No editing, no adding captions to the photo itself, no longer than two minutes publishing a post.

I miss those days.

So here I am … bringing it back.

MONDAY !

The weather has me feeling nostalgic about one of my favourite old studio locations : COLLEGE+OSSINGTON.

That space was my first and only attempt at a street level studio front and my third location overall. (We’ve had 8 studio locations over time since 2011, and have 3 today!)

It was well before the pandemic, and where we were on College was cute and quaint and quiet … but steps away from what really made Toronto cool.

At the time we had our smaller beauty bar set up at Yonge and Wellington too .. so we had both east and west of downtown Toronto COVERED!

But some of the best things about the College Street studio - the lighting in the back room, the stairwells that allowed Sam and I to create lots of looks and shoot them with my own camera (I thought we were so cool! Lol), and the pink and white walls.

The sun used to come in so nice … and the front room reception was hella cute.

But anyway … this photo is giving Summer. Sam - our extraordinaire always had plenty of ideas and I just went along for the ride and creativity.

To be back there, Sam braiding hair and me doing makeup that showcased sexy summer skin and monochromatic hints of colour, working with models always game to be photographed … TAKE ME BACK!!!

Le sigh. Here’s hoping we have a hot hot summer!
