This photo is from September of 2024. A month before Mavrik’s stage 4 cancer diagnosis. We were preparing for another year of daycare. Another year of school for our other 2 kids. And in a blink of an eye things change so fast. You go to work one day and don’t go back for years because you are 9 hours away from home while your child fights cancer. The reality is 1,300 children every year get diagnosed with cancer. Just under 200 kids per year in British Columbia alone. Kids that are preparing to go to school, be with their friends, have ordinary and exciting lives. But these 1,300 kids have the biggest change of their lives. When they finish treatment they live with the damage of chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries, immunotherapy, all in their young and tiny bodies. For Mavrik, if we would have come home, he would have to live with hearing loss from the chemotherapy, mobility assistance, speech therapy, and ongoing medical appointments. Not including the anxiety and ptsd of doctors, medical appointments and trying to re-integrate into a “normal” child’s life. We need better treatments for kids that aren’t from the 60’s and tailored to adults. We will never stop advocating for change and better treatments. Especially in the north where our children are forced out of their community, away from their family and friends, and isolated. Because instead of a first day of school, thousands of children are preparing for another round of toxic chemotherapy to save their lives. 🎗

It’s September 2nd, and we have some exciting news to share!

The Mavrik Turnbull Foundation has officially partnered with the Prince George Cougars for the 2026/2027 season! 🏒

Our hockey community has shown up for our family in ways we will never forget, and we know that support will continue — in Mavrik’s honour and for the other paediatric oncology children and families in Prince George.

Throughout the season, a portion of every individual home game ticket purchased using our special code will go directly to the Mavrik Turnbull Foundation.

That means when you’re in the stands for the Teddy Bear Toss, Hockey Fights Cancer Night, or any of the other amazing games this season, you can also be helping us support local families whose children are fighting for their lives.

September is childhood cancer awareness month.

September is also Mavrik’s birthday month.

September is also his funeral.

This is the reality of childhood cancer. It’s having his funeral and celebrating his birthday the next day. Instead of planning his birthday presents I’m writing an obituary.

In Prince George and the surrounding areas there has been roughly 8 kids diagnosed with cancer in the last 5 months. This is what drives us to build this foundation because even though Mavrik’s story ended, there are kids from our community fighting for their lives ever. single. day.

The thing with childhood cancer isn’t that their parents did something wrong, or they ate too much junk food, or were exposed to microplastics. It’s simply their bodies miscalculating and creating cancer cells. For Mavrik, at some point while he was growing so much as a toddler (as they do) he had one cell that doubled too quickly. That cell continued to misprint and double, and double some more. Creating tumours in his body that would continue to grow without chemotherapy and radiation intervention.

This journey that Mavrik and our family have been on is not rare. With the increase of children being diagnosed with cancer from Prince George and the surrounding smaller communities, I bet you know at least one of these families personally.

Every day this month we plan to make a post to share our story about Mavrik’s journey. Some of the posts might be happy from some of the good moments and others the reality of the situation, depressing, isolating, living in fight or flight.
