Everyone has heard the old phrase "it's a burn now but it will turn into a tan later… " and at the midpoint of summer if you combine that dangerous skin myth with the misinformation network spreading around the idea that sunscreen is bad for you, your skin could be paying the price. We thought it might be time for a myth-busters post: summer skin care vibes.

First up we cannot stress this enough: a sunburn will NOT "turn into a tan". A sunburn is a massive
inflammatory response in your skin caused by the Ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. A tan is an accumulation of excess melanin triggered by sunlight causing it to change or deepen in color.

The key word in sunburn is "burn", which is why it results in redness, pain, peeling and itching
Getting sunburnt does not prevent or reduce future burns and repeated sunburns weaken the skin's structural integrity over time. The reality is a sunburn does not create a tan or any form of natural SPF and a tan does not protect you from developing skin cancer.

What WILL prevent you from developing skin cancer is using sunscreen that blocks the harmful ultraviolet radiation in sunlight from damaging your skin cells.
