Deaths caused by gas heaters (such as gas-powered Bukharis), wood, or coal fires are often due to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning or related hazards. Here are the reasons behind these fatalities:

1. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Cause: Incomplete combustion of fuels like gas, wood, or coal releases carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, and toxic gas.

Mechanism: When inhaled, CO binds to hemoglobin in the blood, preventing oxygen from being delivered to the body's organs and tissues, leading to suffocation at the cellular level.

Symptoms: Dizziness, headache, nausea, confusion, and in severe cases, unconsciousness or death.

2. Oxygen Depletion

Cause: Closed spaces with inadequate ventilation can cause the burning process to consume the available oxygen, leading to low oxygen levels.

Effect: Hypoxia (lack of oxygen in the body) can result in unconsciousness and death.

3. Fire Hazards

Cause: Gas heaters or coal/wood fires can cause accidental fires if not properly managed or maintained.

Effect: Burns, smoke inhalation, or asphyxiation can occur in such incidents.

4. Toxic Fumes from Combustion

Cause: Burning coal or wood may release other toxic gases, such as sulfur dioxide (SO₂) or nitrogen oxides (NOx), which can irritate the respiratory system and, in high concentrations, lead to poisoning.

Prevention Tips:

Ventilation: Always ensure proper ventilation in rooms where gas heaters, coal, or wood fires are used.

CO Detectors: Install carbon monoxide detectors to monitor air quality.

Regular Maintenance: Ensure gas heaters and chimneys are maintained and checked for leaks.

Avoid Closed Spaces: Do not use gas heaters or open fires in tightly sealed rooms.
