You may have seen the news... A US federal council just voted to recommend opening four protected marine monuments in the Pacific to commercial fishing, including Papahānaumokuākea, one of the most sacred and biodiverse places on the planet.
It feels like a done deal. But it isn't.

This is still a recommendation. It still has to move through federal agencies and the White House. There are still legal battles ahead. And there is still time if we don't look away!

This is exactly the moment the industry is counting on. The moment people feel defeated and stop pushing. Don't give them that.

Join our campaign "Hands Off the Monuments" and take action through the link in our bio. It takes two minutes and really matters!

Share this with someone who cares. Tag your family and friends, tell them what's happening! The ocean doesn't have a voice in that federal process, but we do.

In 2023, biologist and National Geographic Explorers David Gruber and Shane Gero set out to study s***m whales off Dominica's coast as part of a @projectceti team studying s***m whale communication. What they stumbled upon was far more extraordinary—a whale in labor.

For decades, whale births eluded observation. Project CETI's newly published findings provide a detailed picture not just of the birth, but of a whale family’s collaborative effort to care for the mother and infant—providing the first quantifiable evidence of an animal species other than primates engaging in an assisted birth.

Discover more about how s***m whale families support mothers in labor, and what it reveals about midwifery in the animal kingdom at the link in bio.

Researchers may have recorded the first evidence of marine animals practising midwifery.

Using footage and audio captured by drones, underwater hydrophones, and ship-based photography, Project CETI researchers recorded one of the most detailed observations of a s***m whale birth in the wild.

Scientists observed that the mother, 'Rounder', was surrounded by a tightly packed group of other female s***m whales during and after the 33-minute birth.

Within a minute of the newborn calf entering the water, members of the group appeared to coordinate diving and lifting movements to help raise the calf to the surface of the Caribbean Sea, where it took its first breath.

By analysing captured footage, audio, and almost two decades of prior research on this group of whales, scientists identified that Rounder's own mother provided support during her labour. Her half-sister and aunt stayed close to the new mother after the birth.

Founder and President of Project CETI David Gruber says s***m whales “communicate socially at the surface” using a series of “stereotypical clicks” from which researchers have been able to show a “s***m whale phonetic alphabet”.

Key shifts in these vocal patterns were observed during the birth.

Researchers believe the behaviours seen in the group may be part of a tens of millions of years old survival strategy.

Coming into the world tail-first, newborn calves' bodies aren't quite ready to swim efficiently because their s***maceti organ lacks enough oil to help them regulate buoyancy.

"So, in this process, for another placental mammal to give birth underwater, the baby would basically sink directly, and the fluke is still folded for the first few hours. So, in order to successfully give birth in the water as a mammal, this type of communication and uplifting is necessary," says Gruber.
