What are the difference between chemical and physical sunscreen filters?

Buying sunscreen as a consumer can be quite challenging—what do all the terms on the packaging really mean? There are two types of filters: chemical and physical sunscreen filters. Today, I’ll explain the difference between the two.

Chemical filters:

🥼 Pe*****te the skin
🥼 Often waterproof
🥼 Are transparent
🥼 Absorb sunlight using carbon compounds
🥼 Some chemical filters can enter the bloodstream and may disrupt hormones
🥼 Require approximately 30 minutes to absorb before they protect the skin
🥼 Effective chemical filters include: Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol triazine, Menthylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, and ethylhexyl triazone.

Physical filters:

🧴 Sit on top of the skin
🧴 Reflect and absorb sunlight using metal particles
🧴 May leave a white cast due to zinc
🧴 Often less resistant to water and sweat
🧴 Provide protection immediately after application
🧴 Effective physical filters include: Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide

As you can see, both types of filters have their advantages and disadvantages. The best formula combines both physical and chemical filters to ensure optimal protection for the skin.
