State chateau of Hluboká!

The chateau of Hluboká was originally founded as a guarding castle in the mid 13thcentury by the Kings of Bohemia, and being royal property, it was frequently forfeited. Several aristocratic families took turns owning it. The important ones included e.g. the Lords of Pernštejn, who founded the nearby fishpond of Bezdrev in 1490, the second largest fishpond in Bohemia. The prominent aristocratic family of the Lords of Hradec purchased the domain in 1561.Two years later, the new owners had the original Gothic castle rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau. In the late 16th century, the next owner was the family Malovec of Malovice, who, being Protestants, lost the property in 1619, andcfour years later Emperor Ferdinand II of Habsburg gave it as a compensation for war claims to the Spanish general Don Balthasar de Marradas. In 1661, Jan Adolf I of Schwarzenberg bought Hluboká from hisnephew. The Schwarzenbergs lived in Hluboká until the end of 1939, when the last owner Dr. Adolf emigrated overseas to escape from the N***s. They lost their property once for all through a special Act, Lex Schwarzenberg in 1947. Thanks to their very well-managed property and large-scale economic activities, the Schwarzenbergs twice rebuilt the chateau of Hluboká, first in the early 18th century in the Baroque style, and later, they carried out an extensive reconstruction of the chateau in the romantic neo-Gothic style of the in the years 1840 – 1871, including a re-arrangement of the park and the surrounding countryside.

Bohemia Switzerland!
The Czech natural landscape boasts several European “bests”. One of them lies in the heart of the fabulous Bohemian Switzerland. Its symbol, the Pravčická brána (Pravčice Sandstone Gate), is the biggest natural rock arch in Europe. Its monumental height and the mass of this rock formation will totally amaze you – the dimensions of this rock arch are truly impressive.
When you stand directly under the Pravčická brána it will seem even larger. This rock arch has a span of 27 metres and rises up to a height of 21 metres. At its narrowest point, however, it is relatively thin, therefore its top is inaccessible. Beautiful views of this unique natural formation, however, can be enjoyed from several nearby look-out points. Directly below the Pravčická brána you can relax at the romantic chateau called Sokolí hnízdo (meaning Falcon’s Nest).

The Bohemian Switzerland it isn’t just about rock formations; there are also idyllic boat trips to enjoy in the area’s gorges. Board a punt heading downstream or upstream on the River Kamenice; these craft are manned by ferrymen who provide an interesting commentary. The trip through the Edmund Gorge is 960m long and takes around 20 minutes; the Divoká Gorge is 450m long and can be travelled through in around 15 minutes. Refreshments are available between gorges. The path to the gorges following the river between the rocks and through tunnels is also an exciting experience.

Climb Mount Sněžka – the queen of Czech mountains!
The highest Czech mountain rises up from the long ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains like a pointed three-sided needle. Set out to conquer the queen of Czech mountains and one of the symbols of the Czech Republic. Your reward for conquering its 1,602 metre peak will be a wonderful view of the Czech Republic and Poland and the feeling that you can’t get any higher in the Czech Republic. So put on some sturdy boots, pack what you need and set off for the heights!
If you enjoy activity, you can set out to the peak of Mount Sněžka along the marked hiking routes. On the way there, wonderful views of the Krkonoše National Park will open out for you, which thanks to its harsh climate and glacial past is conspicuously reminiscent of the Scandinavian countryside. If your physical prowess is limited or if you want to simply enjoy a cable car journey, we can set out to Pec pod Sněžkou, the start station of the cable car is located. Over the course of about half an hour, you will thus easily overcome the increase in height by about 700 metres.

Mount Sněžka has been popular among travellers for centuries already. The first documented ascent to its summit dates back as far as 1456, when a certain Venetian merchant was looking for precious stones. One hundred years later, a certain Silesian Humanist attempted to ascertain how high Mount Sněžka is, measuring a respectable 5,880 metres. Although nowadays we can only laugh at this figure, wonderful experiences whilst ascending it and the joy of healthy exercise whilst passing through some wonderful countryside persist to this very day.

Bozkovské jeskyně : dolomitové jeskyně 17/04/2014

Bozkovské Dolomite Caves
The dolomite caves in Bozkov are a favourite tourist destination and belong among the most frequently visited places in Český Ráj. Because of the length of over 1,000 metres, it is the largest known cave system in northeastern Bohemia. The caves are characterized by abundant silica banks, ledges and natural bars, with rich stalactite and stalagmite decorations. The top part of the tour is water areas comprising little lakes, with the largest underground lake in Bohemia with limpid blue-and-green water at the very end.
The caves had been created for thousand years, during the long process of continuous dissolving of the Paleozoic calcic dolomite. However, the development of the underground karst formations was limited by the area and the thickness of the relatively small dolomite pocket that is bordered by insoluble slate rock and belongs to a part of a sporadic belt of karst rocks stretching through the region of the Krkonoše from the west to the east. In the course of the Quaternary period, some of the previously formed underground space was filled with deposits of surface sediments. At that time, the stalagmite and stalactite decoration was developed.
The existence of the underground space in Bozkov was revealed by accident, by a blast in a small dolomite quarry in 1947. The caves were made accessible to the public in 1968. They were declared a national natural monument in 1999. As the temperature in the caves varies around 7-8°C and the tour takes approximately 45 minutes, it is recommended to wear warm clothes.
