🎬 OPEN FRAME: Finding Her Way Into Film

What does it really take to find your way into filmmaking and develop a creative voice of your own?
For this edition of Open Frame, we sit down with filmmaker and illustrator Hawi Kefale to talk about the journey behind the work: moving from architecture and commercial media production toward narrative filmmaking, navigating the industry, and building a career around storytelling.
With over nine years of experience in media production, Hawi has worked across directing, storyboarding, writing and production. Her journey includes directing the teen drama series Yegna and an episode of the DStv anthology series Addis Fikir, which went on to win an Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA).

Her creative journey has also taken her beyond Ethiopia. Through a film residency in Morocco organized by Tamayouz and UNESCO, she developed and produced a short film while collaborating in an international creative environment.

But behind every milestone is a journey, the decisions, challenges, experiments and lessons that rarely make it into a professional bio.

That’s what Open Frame is about.

From training to film production.

The Creative Hub Filmmaking Academy, Addis Ababa has reached an important milestone: one original short film project is moving from development into production.

After an intensive training phase covering storytelling, pitching, creativity, project development and line production, participants developed four original concepts:

🎥 Anasgebam
🎥 Wait for Me
🎥 Belay
🎥 The Little Jebena

Following the project selection process, Wait for Me, developed by Eyob Fentaw, Abugeta Taddele, Bereket Getnet, Ermias Getahun, Dawit Solomon and Ruth Takele, has been selected to move forward into script development and production.

The next stage will take the team through collaborative screenplay development, mentorship and pre-production, leading to principal photography in Ethiopia from 19, 24 October 2026.

A teaser is expected in November, with the completed short film scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2027.

This is what international cooperation can look like beyond agreements and partnerships on paper: knowledge is transferred, people are trained, ideas are developed, and creative work moves into the real world.

Through collaborations like this, Creative Hub Ethiopia continues to connect Ethiopian talent with international expertise and networks helping build stronger creative industries and creating pathways for future projects, opportunities and growth.
