Matangi is one of the Ten Mahavidyas. She differs from the principal ta***ic Devatas in that she does not have the standard bija system. While the sādhana of Kali, Lalita, Tara, Bagalamukhi and others begins with the repetition of a single bija-mantra and then gradually unfolds, with Matangi the full mantra is used from the outset. Mantra systems like that of Matangi are most effectively practised through the path of vamachara (the left-hand path).

Matangi is associated with the manas (mind) and lunar energy, which is akin to nectar — bringing inspiration and nourishing creative powers within a person. However, creativity is never linear, and the excessive “dryness” of discipline is balanced by everything that is considered “forbidden”, “ignored”, or “repressed”.

Matangi is sometimes called Sumukhi, meaning “perfection in speech”. She bestows mantra-siddhi (perfection through mantras), the power of attraction and control (vashikarana), as well as the ability to enchant (mohana). She is the Goddess who reveals anugraha (divine grace from above) or prasada (grace, blessing) through the impure. Hence, the name Matangi is also associated with the lower jatis (castes). The lower castes hold a special place in vamachara rituals. People often become increasingly mannered and fixated on “proper” behaviour as they age, living by social templates, which gradually strangles all creative impulse — without which there is no space for genuine spirituality. Matangi represents the power that breaks all such laws and moulds that reduce a person to a pashu — a social zombie. She is the power that grants mukti (liberation).

Worshipping Matangi in the form of Chandalini, the sadhaka confronts their most base, animalistic tendencies in order to transcend dualistic consciousness. The name Chandalini is derived from chandala — the outcaste, the untouchable. According to one legend, Matangi was born into a chandala family. Though chandalas are considered impure, vamachara follows the principle that when the Goddess is worshipped in a woman from the lower social strata during a kaula ritual, this becomes the most potent context for vama-sadhana.

Besides the names Sumukhi and Ucchishta-Chandalini, this Goddess is also known by many others: Laghu Shyama or Shyamala, Raja Matangi, Karna Matangi, Chanda Matangi, Vashya Matangi, Matangeshwari, Jyeshtha Matangi, Sarikamba, Ratnamba, Vartali Matangi.

The Vasanta Navaratri (Spring Navaratri) is celebrated from the first day of the Chaitra month to Ram Navami🌸🌷

The Puranas mention Trikuta as one of the twenty mountains surrounding Mount Meru, the abode of Brahma. It is generally believed that Trikuta is the second home of Durga. The mountain has this name because it was created by the combined power of the three Goddesses, aspects of Durga: Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati, with the aim of ending evil throughout the world. Another version says that Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati came together to create a special incarnation of Devi to maintain righteousness in the world. In order to achieve this goal, Durga, in her three manifestations, decided to enter into prolonged meditation and become part of the mountain. This legendary Trikuta mountain, containing three peaks, is believed to be located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. There is home to one of the most sacred places of Shakti worship, the Vaishno Devi Temple (another name for Durga).

📜The word ‘Durga’ is a form of mantra made up of the Sanskrit letters: ‘da’, ‘u’, ‘ra’, ‘ga’ and ‘a’. It is explained as follows:

daityanāśārthavacano dakāraḥ parikīrtitaḥ ।
ukāro vighnanāśasya vācako vedasammataḥ ॥
repho rogaghnavacano gaśca pāpaghna vācakaḥ ।
bhaya śatrughnavacanaścākāraḥ parikīrtitaḥ ॥

The letter ‘da’ denotes the death of demons and ‘u’ has been recognised by the Vedas as destroying obstacles. ‘Ra’ destroys diseases and “ga” destroys sins, “a” dispels fear and destroys enemies. This is how the exact meaning of Durga's name is expressed.

Honoring Durga in Navaratri for the first three days in her aspect as Kali, a sadhaka eradicates imperfections in his heart, concerning ignorance, laziness, inertia, anger and negative tendencies of the mind. The next three days Lakshmi fills a purified person with joy and virtues, developing divine qualities (compassion, purity and stability of the mind). Simultaneously, it symbolises the creative process, which occurs after the destruction of the old and negative. The last three days and nights are dedicated to worshipping Saraswati, who gives wisdom and light to our consciousness and opens creative abilities.

Honouring the Shakti aspects in Navaratri gives strength for six months.

Navaratri, which occurs in the month of Paush or Pushya (December - January), is dedicated to Shakambhari Devi. Shakambhari Mata Navaratri is a major festival in some parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. On these days, a large number of pilgrims arrive there and festive pujas are conducted.

🌺The story of Shakambhari Devi🌺

Many centuries ago, in the Hiranyaksha dynasty, a great asur Durgama was born. From his birth he was an enemy of the Devas and ruminated on, “The strength and power of the Devas depended on the Vedas, then if there was no Vedas – there was no yagya, if there was no yagya – the Devas would not get their share of fire sacrifices and hence would lose all their power and valour.” So, Durgamasur decided to seize all the Vedas and went to the Himalayas to perform ascesis by abstaining from eating and drinking. After a thousand years Brahma appeared to him and asked him what boon he wanted. Durgama said, ‘I should get the Vedas, all the mantras known to the Brahmanas and Devas in the three worlds, and all the supreme deities of these mantras should come and appear before me and submit to my control; I should also get the power to defeat all the Devas.” Brahma granted Durgama all the boons and made a promise that the Devas could not destroy him in any battle. After acquiring such boons, he set about destroying everything all over the earth. In battle, he defeated Indra and locked him in confinement. As a result, it stopped raining on the earth for a century. All living beings were thirsty for water. And in the absence of the Vedas, the Brahmans could not remember the mantras and perform religious rituals. For 100 years no ablutions, no daily rites, no memorial rites, no yagyas, no japa and no tapas were performed. Realising the dire consequences of Durgama’s rule, the Gods took refuge with Maha Devi, the Great Goddess. They prayed to her, “O Mother, as thou hast destroyed Shumba and Nishumba, and brought an end to the calamities of mankind, so destroy Durgama too!” Seeing her children in misery, the Goddess' eyes overflowed with tears of compassion. She looked at the Gods and Saints with her hundred eyes. Water poured from her eyes, and thousands of rivers rose from their banks. Forests regained their leaves and the land became suitable for farming. Rivers, reservoirs and oceans were filled with water. The gods were happy again. The calamities of men ceased. Since the Goddess looked at everything with compassion with her hundred eyes, the Gods named her Śatakshi (śatākṣī – ‘the 100-eyed one’) and began to worship her. When the whole world was dried up due to lack of rain, Goddess Shatakshi created vegetation from her body and saved everyone from starvation. Therefore, she is also known as Shakambhari Devi.

After restoring order on earth, the Goddess asked the devas, “How else can I help you?” The devas pleaded with her and said, “Please return to us the four Vedas that were stolen by Durgama!” The Goddess then engaged in battle with Durgama and his army. The fight became fierce and furious. Numerous shakti in full armour such as Dharini, Bala, Tripura, Bhairavi and Kali with 10,000 arms emerged from Devi's body. Durgama's army was destroyed. The battle then commenced directly between Devi and Durgama. Fifteen arrows of Devi struck the asura at the same time and he was killed (‘The Devi Bhagavata’, Saptama Skandha). By destroying Durgamasura, the Goddess brought back the Vedas. She is called Durga, as she killed the demon Durgama. In fact, the three names: Shatakshi, Shakambhari and Durga are the names of the same Goddess.

🌺🪔Dīpāvali (Diwali) or the festival of lights is an important and popular festival in honor of Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, happiness and spiritual harmony. Since Lakshmi bestows money, beauty and position in society, also protection from all kinds of misfortunes and poverty, She awakens the corresponding qualities in those who worship her.

Divali (Dipavali) is derived from the combination of two Sanskrit words: ‘Dipa’ and ‘Avali’, where 'dipa' stands for lights and 'avali' stands for rows. Thus, the literal meaning of Divali equals to ‘rows of lights’. On the day of Diwali, Bhagwati Devi Shri Lakshmi is believed to visit Bhu Loka (Earth) and if She will be pleased with the worship of her devotee, then She will live in the house of a worthy sadhaka, who is a follower of Dharma (righteousness). And therefore, on this day, many oil lamps are lit on this day to welcome the Goddess and show her the path to your house.

Diwali is also considered an auspicious day to start spiritual practice.

"Spiritual practice liberates the practitioner's consciousness from the blinkeredness of false morality. Sri is a living force that frees from the samsaric inert darkness. This is not an easy process and not everyone goes through it indeed. Before worshiping Lakshmi, there is usually worship of Kali, they are always together, the emptiness of shmashana and the wealthy palace of Goddess Sri. Through peace and renunciation we begin to live, and through clinging to dharma and adharma we fall into the shackles of death. I congratulate all worthy and friendly people on this special festival!”

The most famous text describing, the nature of Durga Goddess, her manifestations and qualities, ways of worship, is Devi Mahatmya (Greatness of Goddess), also called Durga Saptashati (Seven Hundred Shlokas Dedicated to Durga), which is part of Markandeya Purana. Devi Mahatmya describes in detail the meaning and symbolism of Navaratri festival (Nine Nights dedicated to Divine Mother Durga), which is especially widely celebrated throughout India in autumn and called Sharada Navaratri – from “sharad” (what means "autumn”).

Durgā [durˈga:] is one of the hypostases of the Mother Goddess, whose veneration is widespread throughout India. There are several interpretations of Her name: "difficult to reach", "invincible", "the destroyer of misfortunes", "red as fire" and "the killer of Durga" (Durga [ˈdurga] is an asura-demon killed by the Goddess) according to Skanda Purana.

Meaning of the word Durga🌺🔥

This word is a form of mantra composed of the Sanskrit letters "da", "u", "ra", "ga" and "a". This is explained as following:

daityanāśārthavacano dakāraḥ parikīrtitaḥ ।
ukāro vighnanāśasya vācako vedasammataḥ ॥
repho rogaghnavacano gaśca pāpaghna vācakaḥ ।
bhaya śatrughnavacanaścākāraḥ parikīrtitaḥ ॥

The letter "da" denotes the death of demons and "u" was recognised by the Vedas as destroying obstructions. "Ra" destroys diseases and "ga" – sins, "a" dispels fear and annihilates enemies. This is how the exact meaning of Durga's name is expressed.

Accordingly, the Devi Upanishad says:

tāmāgnivarṇāṃ tapasā jvalantīṃ vairocanīṃ karmaphaleṣu juṣṭām।
durgā devīṃ śaraṇaṃ prapadyāmahe'surānāśayitryai tе namaḥ ॥

We bow before the demon-slayer, who is like fire and diamond, who possesses knowledge and who is especially revered by devotees who want to achieve success in matters. Greetings to Durga Devi in the form of Vairochani (Chinnamasta) as a special power of Agni-tattva!
