We're now well into Asparagus season... did you know the Asparagus season is very short? Only about 8 weeks. Grown right here at Millets, hand picked every morning and delivered straight to the Farm Shop, our Asparagus is as fresh as it gets.
An Asparagus patch takes about three years to establish and the crowns stay in the ground year round. Once the sun comes out and the ground warms the spears start to grow. Now we are well into the season the spears are cut early in the morning and they regrow quickly during the day and are ready to be cut again the next morning.
If you continue to cut your Asparagus for too long, you risk damaging the crop for future years and so in June the spears are left to grow into tall, leafy "ferns". These ferns perform photosynthesis, creating carbohydrates that are transferred down into the roots to fuel next year's crop. Allowing the plant to "rest" for the remainder of the summer ensures larger, juicier shoots and a productive bed that can last for 20 years!

Did you know we manually mark out the maze pathways ourselves every year? With some fabulous helpers, Chloe and Helen headed out into the field armed with a plan and some markers earlier this week. Next up, the team will spray the pathways to stop the maize growing any further, leaving the rest of the field to grow and reveal this years epic maze!
(Sharing our team notes here so we are held accountable next yearβ¦ βRESCHEDULE maze marking out if the planned date falls on a record breaking hot dayβ π« )
